Contrasexual Completion: A Two-Axis Model of Adult Structure
Version 3. After Jung. M-sequence calibrated to the cognitive line (Piaget → Commons; Cook-Greuter stage assignments); F-sequence after Neumann (“On the Moon and Matriarchal Consciousness”); medial type after Wolff; polarity premise after Deida; Meaning after Emma Jung. Two 7×7 grids, stages 0–6.
1. Axioms
A0 — Polarity. Two essences, real and non-interchangeable, sex-linked in native distribution — modal, not universal; a minority carry the reversed or balanced essence, for whom the grids transpose (transposed exemplars are flagged). Axiomatic after Jung and Deida; the model makes no independent case for it.
A1 — Native primacy. The native essence defines the individual. N ∈ {0…6}. For N ≥ 1 the achieved stage is inhabited in healthy, matured form; intra-native pathology is out of scope. N = 0 is the native essence never claimed — no healthy-inhabitation guarantee, because there is nothing to inhabit. Cell (0,0) is ∅, the double null, outside the completion series.
A2 — Duality (the cut and the span). The masculine line: each stage increases the separation the person can produce and operate across — differentiation, position, structure. The feminine line: each stage increases the separation across which communion holds — participation, contact, relation. The lines are duals: the separations the F-line spans are exactly those the M-line cuts.
A3 — Cognitive correlation. The M-line is the cognitive/perspective-taking line of the established developmental models (Piaget → Commons’ Model of Hierarchical Complexity; the cognitive column of Loevinger/Cook-Greuter). One stage per adult rung: M1 concrete · M2 abstract · M3 formal · M4 systematic · M5 metasystematic · M6 cross-paradigmatic. Consequences: (a) the order of M-stages is logically forced — hierarchical complexity is defined recursively, each order coordinating the operations of the previous — not empirical and not archetypal; (b) what is archetypal is the recurring imagery of the rungs, not their sequence; (c) the F-line is structurally invisible to language-medium instruments (SCT-type), appearing in their data only as content the M-line periodically metabolizes; (d) Cook-Greuter’s Unitive is not a seventh rung but the diagonal at 6 — a completion state read through a one-line instrument, which is why she reports it confounding several levels.
A4 — Transcend-and-include. Both lines are cumulative: stage k contains 1…k. Forced consequences: deficit is cumulative; above the diagonal there is no deficit.
A5 — Same-stage completion. The native essence expresses essentially only where the contra-essence is at the same stage, held in relation — consultable, answering, usable; never possessed (Jung’s figure: a difficult marriage). Pairwise: Mk ↔ Fk. Asymmetric epistemic status: the M-enables-F half is a theorem of A2 (a span presupposes its cut); the F-completes-M half remains axiomatic (a cut unspanned is a wound — phenomenological, not geometric).
A6 — Stage-specific imbalance. Off-parity, the native essence is defined by exactly which completions are missing (deficit set {C+1…N}) or which contra stages stand uncounterbalanced (surplus set {N+1…C}). Nothing is generic immaturity; every lack and every charge has an address.
2. The two lines
M-line (animus; the cut). Phenotype: purpose.
| Name | Cognitive capacity | Note | |
|---|---|---|---|
| M1 | Force | Concrete operations; enactive knowing; a standpoint held under pressure | CG Self-protective → Diplomat band |
| M2 | Direction | Abstract operations; plans, variables, alternatives — additive, unprioritized | CG Expert |
| M3 | Truth | Formal operations; proposition, proof, principle; self-authored goal-systems | CG Achiever. Jung’s deed and word unite here; his deed/word joint was a channel distinction, not a developmental one |
| M4 | Frame | Systematic operations; a framework seen as framework; observer inside the observed; context-dependence | CG Individualist (its cognitive engine) |
| M5 | Meaning | Metasystematic operations; frameworks coordinated; meaning authored across them | CG Strategist; Emma Jung’s Sinn |
| M6 | Freedom | Cross-paradigmatic; the constructing operation itself seen; frames entered, used, relinquished without loss | CG Alchemist; Deida’s freedom; Hermes belongs here |
F-line (anima; the span). Phenotype: radiance. Generative principle: at each stage, communion holds across a greater separation.
| Name | Communion holds across | Completes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| F1 | Life | Proximity — merger, feeding, shared body-field | M1: the standpoint gains something to stand for |
| F2 | Radiance | The gap between two individualities — delight requires the distance it plays across | M2: the plan gains something worth moving toward |
| F3 | Devotion | Time and negativity — contact surviving failed feeling | M3: loyalty to a particular person against third-person evidence |
| F4 | Compassion | Another’s whole system — loving a different framework without requiring change | M4: the frame held around persons, not wielded on them |
| F5 | Grace | Frameworks as such — meeting anyone in their own register | M5: authored meaning stays touchable; he is reachable across his frames |
| F6 | Wisdom (Sophia) | Total otherness — the unmergeable met as other; radiance independent of receiver | M6: freedom becomes loving; sovereignty and voice at the summit |
Completion function, six rungs — the native without its completion:
| k | M without Fk | F without Mk |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Restless, brittle; power requiring discharge | Diffuse, invadable; no perimeter |
| 2 | Grim; achievement without hedonic yield | Contingent; must be received to exist |
| 3 | Correct and cold; accuracy that wounds unnoticed | Boundless; obligation as fate; no refusal that holds |
| 4 | The frame wielded on persons, not held around them | Indiscriminate; acceptance without discernment |
| 5 | Authored meaning nobody can reach him through | Register-locked; met only those who enter hers |
| 6 | Impersonal; blesses, never blessed | Unclaimed; seeing with no name on it |
The duality in plain terms — a reader’s interlude. Before the formalism resumes, A2 in ordinary language. The cut is the masculine line’s basic act: making a separation. Every M-rung is a larger version of cutting — I end here, you begin there (a boundary); this is my goal, the rest is distraction (a direction); this is true, that is false (a principle); this whole worldview is one way of seeing among others (a frame held at arm’s length). The span is the feminine line’s basic act: staying connected across a separation — like a bridge, which does not erase the canyon but holds the two sides together while the gap remains. Every F-rung spans a wider gap: staying near (almost no gap); delighting in someone precisely because they are not you (a small gap, and the spark lives in it); loving through the years when the feeling is gone (a gap in time and mood); loving someone whose whole worldview opposes yours (a canyon). The deep trick is that the two are made for each other literally: only an existing canyon can be bridged — the cuts create the gaps the spans hold love across. No cut, and “love” is merger, two puddles running together; no span, and every cut is just a wound.
In a life: a man in his twenties makes a cut — leaves the family firm for his own workshop (M2, a direction separated out of everyone else’s plans). Necessary, and for a while he is grim and driven; the work has no taste until the same-rung span arrives — the capacity to savour a finished table, to take Sunday off without guilt — and the treadmill becomes a joy. Cut first, span catches up: his rhythm for life (§5.1). A woman the same age moves in the opposite order: she deepens a span first — stays through his bad year, a wider bridge than infatuation needed — and that creates her need for the cut, the refusal that holds, without which her devotion silently becomes captivity. When the no arrives, nothing visible changes — same marriage, same kitchen — but the yes suddenly weighs something, because a no now stands behind it. Span first, cut catches up. And the same event shows both rhythms at once: a couple argues badly; his repair is a cut (name the problem, separate issue from person), hers a span (re-establish contact before anything is solved). Each alone maddens the other — his cut without her span feels cold, her span without his cut feels evasive; together they are the whole repair, the gap named and the bridge across it. The two failure caricatures mark the poles: all cut, no span — the brilliant surgeon who can dissect anything, including every relationship he has had; all span, no cut — the mother who cannot stop giving, absorbed by whoever is nearest, warm, endless, and disappearing. In one sentence: the masculine line learns to make ever finer separations, the feminine line learns to hold love across ever greater ones, and a person grows by alternating the two — while a life goes wrong in exactly two ways: cutting what one never learns to bridge, or clinging so that nothing can ever be cut.
3. The balance law and its theorems
Counterbalance is pairwise: Mk holds Fk. Three regions partition every configuration: balanced {1…min(N,C)}, deficit {C+1…N} (δ < 0), surplus {N+1…C} (δ > 0), with δ = C − N ∈ [−6, +6].
T1 — Deficit (δ < 0). Cumulative (A4). The missing contra stages are undifferentiated, not absent: constitutional, archaic, autonomous. They appear as events — moods, compulsions, and above all projection: fascination with exactly the figures carrying what is undifferentiated. Deficit empties cognition of stake; it never lowers the owned rung (A1).
T2 — Surplus (δ > 0, N ≥ 1). No deficit exists (A4). Pathology is possession: inflation (identification; felt stature = the material’s, not the stage’s), conscription (the native function intact but unfree — defending the material, never testing it), downward translation (stage-C content exits through stage-N instruments: vision → doctrine at M3, mission at M2, sacred force at M1; meaning → the cause at F3, charisma at F2, somatic revelation at F1; analogously up the ladder).
T3 — The two-instrument dissociation (the model’s sharpest prediction). Surplus produces rung-k output with sub-k examinability: an SCT scores the content at k, while any reflective probe on the charged domain itself scores lower. Native development never shows the split; possession always does. Applies mirror-wise to men’s F-surplus.
T4 — Column 0: dissociation. No ego-relation to the contra at any stage. Wholly split-off content becomes maximally archaic and autonomous; the column is unstable — flatness or seamlessness punctured by alien eruptions. The serenity of the top null cells is pre-storm, not attainment.
T5 — Row 0: identification. No native instrument exists to conscript or translate through, so contra content expresses directly as identity — Jung’s anima-identified man, animus-identified woman. The eruption clause flips axes: here the dissociated native essence erupts. Rows 0 and columns 0 are the grid’s two instability regions, meeting at ∅.
T6 — The rhythm. Development alternates native-advance and contra-catch-up phases; healthy trajectories keep |δ| ≤ ~1 (made concrete in §5). Cook-Greuter’s differentiation/integration alternation is this oscillation read through a one-line instrument; the phase is opposite by sex (his integration phases are anima-work; her differentiation phases are animus-work, externally scored, while her native deepening is institutionally invisible). Every off-diagonal cell is an arrested waypoint of the rhythm.
T7 — Ownership rules for cognition per cell. Man at Mn·Fk: owns rung n regardless of column. Woman at Fn·Mk, k ≤ n: owns rung k in relation, at parity quality; her participatory development may exceed her available articulation. Woman at Fn·Mk, k > n: rungs n+1…k produce output without ownership (T3 signature). Row 0: no owned rung; output, where present, is entirely of the unowned kind.
4. The grids and the ninety-eight configurations
Reading the δ numbers. δ = C − N: the contra-essence’s stage minus the native stage — the signed distance from the diagonal. δ = 0 is parity, the completed cells, the only place the native essence expresses essentially (A5). Negative δ is deficit: the contra lags by that many rungs, and the missing rungs are undifferentiated, not absent — they project and erupt (T1); δ = −1 specifically is the road (§5.2), the normal cost of growth when in motion and an arrest when lived in. Positive δ is surplus: contra rungs held above the native ground, unowned — possession, conscription, downward translation (T2); the Zealot’s +5 means five rungs of anima-content riding a rung-1 man. Magnitude tracks severity and archaism — the farther from the diagonal, the more autonomous the split-off material — and the extremes are the instability regions: column 0 (dissociation, δ = −N) and row 0 (identification, δ = +C), meeting at ∅ (T4, T5). Healthy trajectories only ever visit {−1, 0}; every other number on these maps marks somewhere the rhythm broke.

Row M0 — native unclaimed (identification; T5)
M0·F0 — The Unformed (∅). Neither axis begun; pre-adult, institutional or post-catastrophic presentations. Ex: Kaspar Hauser. Near: nothing — “which stage” has no purchase.
M0·F1 — The Nursling (+1). Comfort as identity; no standpoint ever held. Life: provision-seeking; partner as life-support. Erupts: furies; midnight plans dead by morning. Tell: everyone has a plan for his life but him. Ex: Oblomov. Near: Grounded Man (rests, doesn’t reside in rest).
M0·F2 — The Eternal Boy (+2). Puer aeternus; radiant promise as identity, nothing built beneath. Life: brilliant starts; flight at the first ordinary demand. Erupts: gaiety-wrapped cruelty, unowned by lunch. Tell: at fifty, life is still about to begin. Ex: Peter Pan. Near: Rooster (works his display from a real M1).
M0·F3 — The Acolyte (+3). Devotion as identity; the master’s needs are his calendar, the master’s views his views. Erupts: episodic bitterness; the unforeseen betrayal. Tell: ask his opinion, receive his principal’s. Ex: Waylon Smithers. Near: Right Hand (transposed — she executes; he orbits).
M0·F4 — The Empath (+4). Compassion as identity: he feels-with every framework and stands in none; agrees with whoever spoke last, sincerely. Erupts: sudden alien verdicts, then remorse. Tell: his position is the room’s. Ex: Pierre Bezukhov (the early arc) — adopts each interlocutor’s frame in turn, sincerely. Near: Mediator (holds a frame of his own).
M0·F5 — The Chameleon (+5). Grace as identity: meets everyone in their register and is no one anywhere; the perfect fit for every company. Erupts: flight; a season of alien coldness. Tell: ten circles, ten selves, no residue. Ex: Tom Ripley — becomes the company he keeps; Zelig, the human chameleon, close behind. Near: Weaver (authors the story he moves through).
M0·F6 — The Holy Innocent (+6). Love-that-sees as identity on no masculine at all: meets everyone as themselves, protects no one, himself least. Erupts: collapse where a boundary should have been. Tell: everyone is moved by him; no one is protected by him. Ex: Prince Myshkin — the wreckage Dostoevsky wrote is the model’s prediction. Near: Elder (cost enumerable); Vanished (feels nothing — the Innocent feels all).
Row M1 — Force (concrete operations)
M1·F0 — The Weapon (−1, dissociated). Potency with no relation to living. Life: crisis-competent, cumulative in nothing; partners maintained, not met. Erupts: unaccountable tears, one alien act of tenderness or destruction. Tell: can name his skill, not its object. Ex: the Terminator (pre-humanised). Near: Grounded Man; Nursling (no capability either).
M1·F1 — The Grounded Man (0) — complete. Strength with ground; protects what he enjoys. Cognition: concrete, owned, sufficient to its scope. Life: trusted crew-man; simple, loyal, physical. Tell: sits still without a reason. Ex: Samwise Gamgee. Near: Workhorse (works, cannot enjoy).
M1·F2 — The Rooster (+1). Appetite for admiration exceeding what force can hold. Charge: being seen; challenge yields performance. Tell: the drive home tracks how the evening reflected on him. Ex: Gaston. Near: Eternal Boy (no force beneath); Glad Builder (pleasure needs no witness).
M1·F3 — The Enforcer (+2). Devotion expressible only as guarding; loyalty demanded, affection unsayable. Charge: the code — question it, force answers. Tell: equates staying with loving. Ex: Javert — mercy falsifies the code and the dissociated register kills him. Near: Provider (funds rather than guards).
M1·F4 — The Rescuer (+3). Every framework’s suffering felt, translated downward into physical protection of all comers. Charge: the underdog — any underdog; triage is betrayal. Tell: his house fills with strays, human and otherwise, and empties him. Ex: the Good Samaritan — the one who cannot pass the fallen stranger, made scripture. Near: Enforcer (guards his own).
M1·F5 — The Gentle Giant (+4). Grace through a concrete body: he meets every creature in its own register and can say almost none of it. Charge: the misunderstood being. Tell: monsters trust him; committees defeat him. Ex: Hagrid. Near: Rescuer (protects; the Giant befriends).
M1·F6 — The Zealot (+5). Numinous content of full magnitude on a concrete ground; experienced as external mandate; force its only instrument. Charge: the vision — served, never discussed. Tell: intensity vastly exceeds anything he can articulate. Ex: Samson. Near: Prophet-Founder (articulates, builds).
Row M2 — Direction (abstract operations)
M2·F0 — The Engine (−2, dissociated). Initiative intact; end-selection requires the appetite F1 supplies, so ends default to whatever metric is presented. Life: productive, promoted, hollow; partner as agenda item. Erupts: the signal-less resignation or affair; the holiday collapse. Tell: completion registers as task-absence. Ex: Ivan Ilyich. Near: Workhorse (bodily present, merely joyless).
M2·F1 — The Workhorse (−1). Ground intact, delight undifferentiated: can work and be fed, enjoys nothing. Projects: the mid-life radiant woman as revelation. Tell: knows fatigue only via illness. Ex: Boxer. Near: Glad Builder; Provider (flatness devotion-shaped).
M2·F2 — The Glad Builder (0) — complete. A direction he enjoys being on. Life: people join voluntarily; wins savoured, released. Tell: takes a day off without justifying it. Ex: Bob Ross (as commonly read). Near: Rooster (needs the audience).
M2·F3 — The Provider (+1). Devotion carried by direction alone; love exits as provision; identification with the sacrifice precludes auditing it. Charge: the ledger — “after everything I’ve done” in trivial arguments. Tell: answers “do you love her” with what he built. Ex: Willy Loman — provision unto death; “attention must be paid.” Père Goriot is the pure case. Near: Enforcer; Workhorse (no devotional charge).
M2·F4 — The Crusader (+2). Compassion translated downward into campaigns: a cause per season, each sincere, the near neglected for the far. Charge: the current cause. Tell: strangers’ suffering is scheduled; his family’s is not. Ex: Don Quixote (the rescue-errant reading) — serial campaigns for the wronged while the household despairs; Mrs Jellyby (transposed, flagged) is the domestic documentation. Near: Provider (his own are the cause).
M2·F5 — The Fixer (+3). Grace through plans: he meets everyone in-register by arranging for them — introductions, fixes, favours; the attunement runs him. Charge: being the one who makes it work. Tell: every acquaintance owes him a favour; no one knows him. Ex: Figaro. Near: Chameleon (no native direction at all).
M2·F6 — The Prophet-Founder (+4). Numinous depth convertible only into a project; persons become material; destiny-feel throughout. Charge: the mission — his planning can optimise anything except whether it is his. Tell: detailed on the future, blank on the person present. Ex: Captain Ahab. Near: Zealot (cannot articulate); Visionary (authors meaning, one surrender short).
Row M3 — Truth (formal operations; deed and word united)
M3·F0 — The Nihilist (−3, dissociated). Formal power serving nothing alive; accuracy with the stake removed. Life: demolition without proposal; lucid, considerate, absent. Erupts: possession-grade obsession from nowhere, filed as noise. Tell: right, and it helps no one, including him. Ex: Meursault; Bazarov wrote the eruption clause in 1862. Near: Logician (has ground and appetite); Relativist (one rung up, frames without stake).
M3·F1 — The Logician (−2). Discrimination with ground, without delight or warmth; wounds without registering it. Projects: warmth consumed at distance; rage at small domestic breaches. Tell: fluent on feelings, none locatable in his chest. Ex: Mr. Spock; Casaubon; Angelo dramatises the eruption. Near: Critic (has appetite and taste).
M3·F2 — The Critic (−1). Ground and genuine delight — he enjoys, visibly — but no warmth to hold what he enjoys: affection cannot survive the flaw his eye finds. Projects: covert envy of the loyal. Tell: nothing he loves has ever been forgiven a flaw. Ex: Anton Ego. Near: Warm Authority (standards don’t gate affection).
M3·F3 — The Warm Authority (0) — complete. Principle held for particular people; truth-telling that stays; can be wrong about her and love her anyway. Tell: people volunteer their failures to him. Ex: Atticus Finch. Near: Critic; Partisan (one rung up, loyal but frame-locked).
M3·F4 — The Merciful Judge (+1). Compassion conscripting his logic: every argument lands on exculpation; he can convict positions, never persons. Charge: universal mercy — examining it feels like cruelty. Tell: no reasoning of his has ever concluded against anyone. Ex: Alyosha Karamazov (the gentle-confessor reading) — no reasoning of his concludes against anyone. Near: Warm Authority (can convict and stay).
M3·F5 — The Silver Tongue (+2). Register-attunement running his rhetoric: he says what each listener’s world needs to hear, and believes it each time. Charge: the meeting — being contested in any register. Tell: transcripts of him to different audiences do not agree. Ex: symbolic — the counselor of all parties. Near: Fixer (arranges rather than argues); Weaver (authors one story told many ways).
M3·F6 — The Cartographer (+3). Seeing of Sophia-grade forced through formal instruments: the numinous hardens into doctrine; his discrimination defends the map it cannot examine. Charge: the vision; challenge yields sharper argument, never more honest. Tell: warmth reaches the work and never the marriage. Ex: late Tolstoy (as documented; Sophia Tolstoy’s diaries are the partner’s record). Near: Synthesist (systematic native); Visionary (metasystematic native).
Row M4 — Frame (systematic operations)
M4·F0 — The Relativist (−4, dissociated). Every framework seen as framework, nothing anywhere at stake: deconstruction as autopilot; drift. Erupts: an alien conversion — sudden total belief, later unintegratable. Tell: he can dismantle any position and hold none, including that one. Ex: Rick Sanchez — dismantles his own dismantling; the hidden care erupting is the clause in canon. Near: Nihilist (formal, still arguing); Vanished (two rungs up).
M4·F1 — The Watcher (−3). Frames plus elemental ground only: fed, housed, observing systems from a narrow bodily life; delight, devotion, compassion undifferentiated. Projects: fascination with the vivid and the devoted, consumed at distance. Tell: he understands every circle and belongs to none. Ex: Nick Carraway — “within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled”: the cell in his own words. Near: Logician (formal; argues rather than watches).
M4·F2 — The Ironist (−2). Frames with real delight: plays across systems brilliantly, commits to none; devotion and compassion undifferentiated. Projects: sentimentality about believers, denied. Tell: the deflating meta-comment arrives before any feeling. Ex: Oscar Wilde (as commonly read) — every frame played with delight; De Profundis as the feeling arriving late. Near: Critic (formal verdicts); Frame-complete Mediator.
M4·F3 — The Partisan (−1). Frames, delight, devotion — his school is loved and served — but compassion undifferentiated: he cannot love across a framework; rival paradigms are enemies of the people he loves. Projects: obsession with the apostate. Tell: devoted to his own, merciless to other maps. Ex: Sigmund Freud (the movement-politics reading, as documented) — the ring committee; the excommunications of Jung and Adler. Near: Warm Authority (persons above positions); Mediator.
M4·F4 — The Mediator (0) — complete. The frame held around persons: he sees your system, loves you inside it, requires no conversion. Life: the person both sides trust; therapy, diplomacy, arbitration done as vocation. Tell: people leave him more themselves, not more like him. Ex: Uncle Iroh — enters Zuko’s frame and loves him inside it; Carl Rogers is the professional archetype. Near: Partisan; Translator (one rung up, kindly processing).
M4·F5 — The Infinite Host (+1). Grace conscripting the frame: perpetual accommodation; every register met, his own position perpetually deferred. Charge: the hosting — refusing anyone feels like violence. Tell: twenty years of holding space; nothing held for him. Ex: symbolic. Near: Mediator (keeps a position); Pastor (two rungs up, devotional idiom).
M4·F6 — The Synthesist (+2). Sophia-grade seeing exceeding systematic hold: he builds the One Framework of everything; the totality conscripts his system-craft. Charge: the synthesis — gaps in it are wounds. Tell: every conversation ends inside his diagram. Ex: Hegel (as commonly read) — every conversation famously ends inside the System. Near: Cartographer (formal, doctrine); Visionary (metasystematic, authored).
Row M5 — Meaning (metasystematic operations)
M5·F0 — The Hollow Sage (−5, dissociated). Meaning coordinated across frameworks with nothing alive anywhere: profundity concluding against living. Erupts: obsession or collapse, alien and unintegrated. Tell: the wisdom is real and no one, including him, can live on it. Ex: Schopenhauer (as commonly read) — the system concluding against living; Cioran is the purest text. Near: Nihilist (formal); Vanished (freedom-rung phenocopy).
M5·F1 — The Recluse Author (−4). Authored meaning on bare ground: the hermit system-writer; fed, housed, otherwise unaccompanied. Projects: the radiant and the devoted, met only in books. Tell: the collected works are complete; the acquaintance list is not. Ex: Spinoza (the lens-grinder reading) — the Ethics authored in rented rooms. Near: Watcher (holds frames, authors nothing).
M5·F2 — The Virtuoso (−3). Meaning authored with visible delight — dazzling, prize-garlanded — devotion, compassion, grace undifferentiated. Projects: envy of the committed, dressed as pity. Tell: every performance lands; no person does. Ex: symbolic — the touring public intellectual. Near: Ironist (plays frames, authors none).
M5·F3 — The House Philosopher (−2). Meaning authored in service of his own — family, firm, movement — loved and defended; compassion and grace undifferentiated: other registers unheard, other frameworks unforgiven. Tell: magisterial inside the house, deaf at the door. Ex: Vito Corleone — the Bonasera scene is the cell in one take: help refused until the petitioner converts to his register; Mr Ramsay is the domestic-scholarly variant, stalled at Q. Near: Partisan (frames without authored meaning); Weaver.
M5·F4 — The Translator (−1). Meaning, delight, devotion, compassion — he loves across frameworks — but grace undifferentiated: everyone is met by being translated into his meta-language. Tell: all feel understood and slightly processed. Ex: symbolic — the kindly integral counselor. Near: Mediator (meets without translating); Weaver.
M5·F5 — The Weaver (0) — complete. Meaning authored and each person met in their own register: the mentor of mentors; the male pole of the meaning-couple. Tell: his one story reaches you in your words, and he can be reached back. Ex: Viktor Frankl (as commonly read). Near: Translator; Elder (one relinquishment further).
M5·F6 — The Visionary (+1). Sophia-grade seeing one surrender larger than his authorship: the final vision cannot be relinquished, and his meaning-craft defends it. Charge: the revelation behind the work. Tell: he can revise everything except the ending. Ex: William Blake — “I must create a system, or be enslaved by another man’s.” Near: Weaver; Elder (puts even the vision down).
Row M6 — Freedom (cross-paradigmatic operations)
M6·F0 — The Vanished (−6, dissociated). The relinquishing capacity with the whole feminine dissociated: unattachment without prior attachment; the phenocopy of completion at zero cost. Erupts: possession-grade infatuation or an unintegratable episode; the calm is pre-storm. Tell: the cost question is unintelligible to him. Ex: Dr. Manhattan. Near: Elder (cost and history); Holy Innocent (feels everything).
M6·F1 — The Ascetic (−5). Frames relinquished, ground retained, all else undifferentiated: nothing enjoyed, no one particular, nothing touches him. Tell: vast equanimity — except at practical demand. Ex: Simeon Stylites. Near: Vanished (no ground at all); Pastor.
M6·F2 — The Untouchable (−4). Freedom with real charm — delight present and visible — devotion onward undifferentiated: everyone enjoyed, no one chosen, nothing gets in. Projects: the deeply devoted; one early sealed-off attachment. Tell: everyone’s favourite, no one’s person. Ex: Albus Dumbledore (as the later books read him). Near: Ascetic (no delight); Abbot (chooses his own).
M6·F3 — The Abbot (−3). Free, delighting, devoted — his order is loved — compassion onward undifferentiated: love stops at the walls; beyond them, benevolent distance. Tell: inside the gate, everything; outside it, courtesy. Ex: symbolic — the great abbot; canon-search open. Near: Partisan (frame-rung, warring); Benefactor; House Philosopher (one rung down — Vito Corleone’s actual address).
M6·F4 — The Benefactor (−2). Freedom and love across frameworks — the universal benefactor at altitude — grace and receptivity undifferentiated: he gives to all registers from his own, and cannot be reached. Tell: the gifts are perfect; the giver is absent from them. Ex: Magwitch — the secret benefactor across the class-frame; the return-to-be-known as the eruption. Near: Pastor (meets in-register; only receiving missing).
M6·F5 — The Pastor (−1). Everything but the receiving: he blesses in every register, meets each in their own idiom, holds anyone — and cannot be blessed, met, or held. Erupts: the body — exhaustion, illness, one outburst a decade. Tell: all can name what he gave them; none can name what they gave him. Ex: Bishop Myriel — the candlesticks are register-perfect giving; the receiving channel is nowhere in the text. Near: Elder (receives as readily as he gives).
M6·F6 — The Elder (0) — complete. The two lines at their summits, in relation: frames relinquishable without loss, and freedom that loves — touchable, partisan for his own, changeable by a particular person. Tell: he has someone he complains to. Ex: Gandalf — power twice refused, merriment, cost named. Near: Vanished (cost); Pastor (receiving); Weaver (one surrender fewer).

Row F0 — native unclaimed (identification; T5)
F0·M0 — The Unformed (∅). Mirror of the male cell; symbolic — the female Kaspar Hauser has no famous name, itself a datum.
F0·M1 — The Hardened (+1). Force as identity; no feminine ground ever claimed. Erupts: secret sentimentality; a collapse into arms, disowned by morning. Tell: cruelty aimed at the soft — soft women, children. Ex: Miss Trunchbull. Near: Matron (warped care, but care).
F0·M2 — The Warden (+2). Procedure as identity: schedules, protocols, the ward run like a mechanism; nothing feminine beneath the order. Erupts: the body — sleeplessness, compulsion. Tell: the institution is immaculate and no one in it is well. Ex: Nurse Ratched. Near: Nest-Keeper (warm ground under the managing).
F0·M3 — The Ideologue (+3). Doctrine as identity — formal propositions loved for themselves; persons as infractions. Erupts: private kitsch (the nulled feminine as décor) or erotic catastrophe. Tell: the sweetness is on the teacups, nowhere in the conduct. Ex: Dolores Umbridge; Lady Macbeth is the row’s founding text — “unsex me here,” and the sleepwalking scene as the eruption performed. Near: Instinctive Judge (warm ground under unowned verdicts).
F0·M4 — The Theorist (+4). A framework as identity: she is her school of thought; challenges to it are attempts on her life. Tell: biography and bibliography are one document. Ex: symbolic — the woman who is her system. Near: Ideologue (doctrine, not system); Interpreter (native seeing behind the frame).
F0·M5 — The Mythmaker (+5). Authored cosmology as identity: worlds of meaning spun with no feminine ground beneath them. Erupts: somatic crises; contested provenance. Tell: the cosmology grows as the life shrinks. Ex: Helena Blavatsky (as commonly read). Near: Vessel (bodily, visited — the Mythmaker authors).
F0·M6 — The Disincarnate (+6). Detachment as identity; the body and all feminine ground abandoned, not transcended. Erupts: the body itself — illness, starvation’s endgame. Tell: she speaks of her body in the third person. Ex: symbolic — every contemplative tradition documents and warns of her. Near: Dissolved (no chosen identity at all).
Row F1 — Life
F1·M0 — The Open Door (−1, dissociated). Warmth with no perimeter; refusal has nowhere to stand. Erupts: alien rage, or overnight severance, then yielding again. Tell: cannot recall a no that held. Ex: Cinderella (the pre-ball configuration) — no refusal anywhere in the house; Tess Durbeyfield is the tragic full documentation. Near: Rooted Woman; Devoured.
F1·M1 — The Rooted Woman (0) — complete. Embodied warmth with an edge; feeds by selection. Tell: her no is quiet and final. Ex: Molly Weasley. Near: Open Door; Nest-Keeper.
F1·M2 — The Nest-Keeper (+1). Directional surplus through the household: partner’s trajectory administered as support. Charge: how things ought to run; challenge meets logistics. Tell: asked what she wants, answers with the collective optimum. Ex: Mrs. Bennet. Near: Rooted Woman; Warden (no warm ground).
F1·M3 — The Instinctive Judge (+2). Formal propositions fully productive on a concrete ground: verdicts pre-formed, immune to counter-example — thinking without an owner (T3 in pure form). Tell: “she’s just —” as a complete analysis. Ex: Mrs. Norris. Near: Tastemaker (aesthetic, F2 ground); Ideologue (no hearth).
F1·M4 — The Folk Oracle (+3). Whole frameworks arriving on an elemental ground: kitchen cosmology, adopted systems held total and unexaminable. Charge: the worldview — doubt is contamination. Tell: the system explains everything and she can operate none of it. Ex: Sybill Trelawney — the system total and inoperable; her two true prophecies are Vessel-grade content erupting through. Near: Instinctive Judge (verdicts, not systems); Vessel.
F1·M5 — The Vessel (+4). Authored-meaning-grade content through a body with no container; states as revelation; the gift rides her. Charge: the visitations — examining one is refusing it. Tell: cannot locate where she ends and the other begins. Ex: the Pythia — the cell institutionalised; Wolff’s medial type raw. Near: Mythmaker (F0 — authors; the Vessel is visited); God-Ridden.
F1·M6 — The God-Ridden (+5). Frame-transcending truth through flesh: total revelation, no rung of vantage anywhere between body and beyond. Erupts/charge: possession entire. Tell: she is believed by no one and cannot stop speaking. Ex: Cassandra. Near: Vessel (episodic); Dissolved (F6 native — sees, unowned; the God-Ridden is spoken through).
Row F2 — Radiance
F2·M0 — The Mirror (−2, dissociated). Radiance with no vantage of her own: she becomes the perspective others take on her. Erupts: overnight severance; a season of alien verdicts. Tell: asked what she is like alone — no answer, not evasively. Ex: Ophelia. Near: Flame (has an edge); Perfect Echo (three rungs up).
F2·M1 — The Flame (−1). Charm with a perimeter, no vector: her light needs a viewer to exist. Projects: self-directed men as the missing part, which they are. Tell: her CV is a list of others’ ambitions. Ex: Holly Golightly; Daisy Buchanan. Near: Mirror; Kindled Woman.
F2·M2 — The Kindled Woman (0) — complete. Aliveness aimed at a chosen object. Tell: enthusiasm survives solitude. Ex: Elizabeth Bennet. Near: Flame; Nest-Keeper (aim pointed at others’ lives).
F2·M3 — The Tastemaker (+1). Formal verdicts on an F2 ground: instant aesthetic judgement of things, then persons. Charge: quality — questioning a verdict proves coarseness. Tell: judgement complete before the sentence is. Ex: Miranda Priestly. Near: Instinctive Judge (character on F1 ground); Discerning Heart.
F2·M4 — The Icon (+2). A movement’s whole framework carried as style: she is the scene’s living emblem, the system worn as glamour. Charge: the scene — leaving it would be dying. Tell: her taste is a manifesto she cannot state. Ex: Edie Sedgwick (as commonly read) — the Factory’s living emblem; leaving the scene was dying. Near: Tastemaker (verdicts without a system); Enchantress.
F2·M5 — The Enchantress (+3). Authored-meaning-grade depth held only as charisma; the depth located serially in a source. Charge: the current source — examining him betrays the depth itself. Tell: every few years the life rebuilds around a new centre. Ex: Emma Bovary. Near: Vessel (somatic, boundaryless); Free Spirit.
F2·M6 — The Free Spirit (+4). Freedom-grade content as image: liberation worn as glamour, transcendence as perpetual reinvention with no source and no landing. Charge: her own unboundedness. Tell: many lives, no biography. Ex: Isadora Duncan (as commonly read) — reinvention without landing. Near: Enchantress (has a source); Sovereign (claims and remains).
Row F3 — Devotion
F3·M0 — The Devoured (−3, dissociated). Deep care with no vantage to select or stop from; consumed by whoever is nearest. Erupts: collapse, or the unexplained walkout from thirty years. Tell: fluent on everyone’s needs, null on her own preference. Ex: the Giving Tree — consumed limb by limb, “and the tree was happy”; Fantine is the human documentation. Near: Right Hand (selects by role); Open Door (pre-devotional).
F3·M1 — The Matron (−2). Devotion that can defend but not choose: obligation as fate; care and control one gesture. Projects: lifetime rivalry with one woman; verdicts as family law. Tell: no one recalls her asking outright. Ex: Livia Soprano — guilt and illness as instruments of custody; Bernarda Alba holds the house in the older canon. Near: Right Hand; Hardened (no warmth anywhere).
F3·M2 — The Right Hand (−1). Devoted, capable, self-directed in execution not selection; refusal requires the formal ground she lacks. Projects: the articulate and certain; one cutting remark a year. Tell: decisive yes, absent no. Ex: Stevens (The Remains of the Day — transposed essence, flagged); Sonya (Uncle Vanya). Near: Matron; Discerning Heart.
F3·M3 — The Discerning Heart (0) — complete. An articulable object of devotion, and refusal available: fidelity that chose. Tell: her yes signifies because her no exists. Ex: Jane Eyre; Antigone. Near: Right Hand; Advocate (compassion-native).
F3·M4 — The Mother Superior (+1). Her devotion administered through a total system: the order, the method, the house rules as the shape of love. Charge: the institution of care — examining it is betraying the loved. Tell: the rulebook is the love letter. Ex: Sister Aloysius (Doubt) — the institution of care held past examination; her final “I have doubts” is the crack in the cell wall. Near: Discerning Heart (can revise); Matron (no system, pure custody).
F3·M5 — The Servant of the Sacred (+2). Authored theology conscripting devotion: total service with no exit, the calling unexaminable, her real discernment administering rather than auditing it. Tell: asked about a free year — nothing. Ex: Simone Weil (as commonly read). Near: Surrendered; Devoured (never selected — she selected once, totally).
F3·M6 — The Surrendered (+3). Devotion enlisted by the path itself: surrender as service, exit transcended rather than available. Charge: the abandonment to the will beyond her — its examination is apostasy. Tell: the darker the consolation, the deeper she serves. Ex: Mother Teresa (as read through the published letters). Near: Servant of the Sacred (authored theology); Sovereign (can exit and remain).
Row F4 — Compassion (new territory)
F4·M0 — The Sorrow-Bearer (−4, dissociated). Love across every framework with no position anywhere: the world’s suffering pours through unfiltered. Erupts: breakdown; alien hardness episodes. Tell: the news physically injures her. Ex: the Mater Dolorosa — the Pietà: the tradition painted the cell before psychology named it. Near: Devoured (proximal claims — the Sorrow-Bearer drowns in distant ones too).
F4·M1 — The Field Nurse (−3). Compassion with an edge only: tends all comers hands-on, within reach; cannot aim, argue, or claim. Tell: legendary on the ward, invisible above it. Ex: symbolic. Near: Sister of Mercy (organises); Rooted Woman (feeds her own by choice).
F4·M2 — The Sister of Mercy (−2). Compassion with direction: organises care across communities; without formal ground she cannot refuse a claim in principle, and drowns by inclusion. Tell: every project ends over-subscribed and under-defended. Ex: Dorothea Brooke — ardour, plans, and no claim that holds. Near: Field Nurse; Advocate.
F4·M3 — The Advocate (−1). Compassion that can argue: she pleads the other’s framework formally and well; lacking M4 she cannot see frameworks as frameworks, so her advocacy universalises whichever register she has entered. Tell: converted by every client, sequentially. Ex: symbolic. Near: Discerning Heart (devotion-native); Counselor.
F4·M4 — The Counselor (0) — complete. Loves across systems and sees systems: your framework understood as one framework, you loved inside it, no conversion required. Tell: clients leave more themselves. Ex: Mary Poppins (the family-systems reading) — enters each child’s frame from inside it and leaves when the wind changes; Virginia Satir is the professional archetype. Near: Advocate; Evangelist.
F4·M5 — The Evangelist (+1). A meta-story of everyone’s growth conscripting her compassion: all persons become their potential; meeting becomes development. Charge: the growth gospel. Tell: no one is ever simply allowed to be tired. Ex: Pollyanna — the glad game imposed; her name became the idiom. Near: Counselor (no agenda); Reconciler.
F4·M6 — The Liberator (+2). Freedom-grade content enlisting love-across-frameworks: everyone must be freed, from their frameworks, for their own good. Charge: liberation itself. Tell: her compassion arrives as demolition of what you shelter in. Ex: Maude (Harold and Maude) — love arriving as demolition of the death-shelter. Near: Counselor; Threshold-Keeper.
Row F5 — Grace (new territory)
F5·M0 — The Perfect Echo (−5, dissociated). Register-perfect attunement with no self anywhere: the high-order Mirror — she meets you flawlessly and is not there. Erupts: severance; alien verdicts. Tell: everyone was met; no one has met her. Ex: symbolic. Near: Mirror (F2 — reflects appearance; the Echo reflects worlds).
F5·M1 — The Innkeeper (−4). Grace within arm’s reach: all who enter her house are met in their register; beyond the threshold she cannot aim, argue, or claim. Tell: the whole town confides in her kitchen; the town hall has never heard her. Ex: symbolic. Near: Hostess; Rooted Woman.
F5·M2 — The Hostess (−3). Grace with direction: the house where everyone is met, built and run by her; no formal ground to defend it, no claim on it. Tell: the communion happens; the credit evaporates. Ex: Mrs Ramsay (To the Lighthouse) — the dinner where all are met, and the parenthesis in which she dies unattributed. Near: Innkeeper; Reconciler.
F5·M3 — The Peace-Weaver (−2). Grace that can argue: she articulates each party’s register and mediates between them; without frame-independence she is absorbed by whichever register is loudest. Tell: every peace she weaves is credited to the parties. Ex: Wealhtheow, the frithuwebbe of Beowulf — the cup carried between factions. Near: Hostess; Go-Between.
F5·M4 — The Go-Between (−1). Grace with frames: meets every register and sees them as registers; lacking authored meaning she carries others’ mandates, never her own. Tell: trusted by all sides, principal to none. Ex: symbolic. Near: Peace-Weaver; Reconciler.
F5·M5 — The Reconciler (0) — complete. Grace with authored meaning: she meets each in their own register and authors the shared story they can live in; the female pole of the meaning-couple. Tell: enemies leave her table with one narrative and their own words in it. Ex: Etty Hillesum (as read through the diaries). Near: Go-Between; Sovereign (one claim further).
F5·M6 — The Threshold-Keeper (+1). Freedom-grade content conscripting the meeting: every encounter becomes an initiation; she greets persons and delivers them to the path. Charge: the doorway. Tell: her welcomes all point past her. Ex: the Oracle (The Matrix) — cookies in your register; “you’ve already made the choice.” Near: Reconciler; Liberator (demolishes; the Keeper ushers).
Row F6 — Wisdom
F6·M0 — The Dissolved (−6, dissociated). Sophia-grade perception with no subject at any rung: seeing occurs, no one is positioned at it; phenocopy of egolessness (pre-egoic, not post-). Erupts: alien hardness; possession-grade certainty. Tell: cannot say whether the insight was hers; finds the question meaningless. Ex: Séraphine de Senlis (as commonly read). Near: Sovereign (cost, attribution); God-Ridden (F1 — spoken through).
F6·M1 — The Wise Body (−5). Total seeing carried in flesh: accurate for decades, undefendable above the bodily perimeter, unaimable, unsayable, unclaimed. Tell: she was right, said nothing, nobody found out. Ex: Dilsey. Near: Dissolved (hers, merely voiceless); Sibyl.
F6·M2 — The Sibyl (−4). Seeing with aim: she originates and builds; cannot hold a position under challenge, map the frames, author the story, or claim the credit — it migrates to the confident. Tell: everyone consults her; nothing bears her name. Ex: Véra Nabokov (as documented) — enormous initiative, the claim alone declined. Near: Wise Body (no aim); Unspoken Seer.
F6·M3 — The Unspoken Seer (−3). Seeing that argues: positions held and defended formally; the frame-view, the authored story, and the claim still missing — outranked by better-claiming inferiors, her points resurfacing in others’ mouths. Tell: most perceptive in the room, least quoted. Ex: Anne Elliot. Near: Sibyl; Interpreter.
F6·M4 — The Interpreter (−2). Seeing with frames: she maps whole systems of thought and the men who built them; authored meaning and the claim remain missing — the great reader behind other people’s schools. Tell: three canons carry her fingerprints and none her name. Ex: Lou Andreas-Salomé (as commonly read). Near: Unspoken Seer; Regent.
F6·M5 — The Regent (−1). Everything but the final freedom: she sees, meets, authors, rules — in another’s name. The realm runs on her meaning; the throne is not claimed, and she cannot relinquish what she never took. Tell: the institution’s direction was hers for twenty years and she would not say so. Ex: symbolic — the regent of the histories. Near: Interpreter; Sovereign.
F6·M6 — The Sovereign (0) — complete. The two lines at their summits, in relation: Sophia’s seeing — always hers — with the claim, the voice, the name, and the freedom to lay them down and remain. Tell: she speaks when speaking will cost her. Ex: Galadriel — offered the surplus configuration outright, she names it, refuses it, and remains. Near: Dissolved (cost); Regent (the claim); Free Spirit (the remaining).
5. Dynamics: the road and the motor
5.1 The grammar of movement
From any cell (N, C), exactly two moves are legal. Native advance (N → N+1): permitted only from parity (δ = 0), and it creates a deficit of exactly one — felt incompleteness is the normal cost of growth. Contra advance (C → C+1): permitted only from δ = −1, as catch-up to parity, never past it. Every pathology is a grammar violation: arrest (a δ = −1 cell inhabited until it becomes character — the deficit portraits of §6 are arrests); stacked advance (native moves from δ < 0: the Weapon → Engine → Nihilist trajectory of the successful hollow man); overshoot (contra raised past parity into surplus, typically installed through a carrier — teacher, tradition, beloved); skipping (excluded by A4; what presents as skipping is null-column mimicry). Arrest may also be externally stabilized: a substitution economy (§8) pays a standing wage — in function, belonging, or livelihood — for remaining at δ = −1, which is why carrier-roles resist movement until the subsidy fails. Repair grammar: the road describes healthy ascent; return from δ < −1 is lawful as successive contra advances toward parity, each step toward the diagonal — and is fastest beside a complete partner, for whom each rung claimed costs nothing (§8.10).
Vocabulary rule (A2 is absolute). Cut and span are not sex-relative labels for “native” and “contra.” The cut is always the differentiation act, the span always the integration act, whoever performs it. Hence: his rhythm is cut-led — native advance is a differentiation; the span arrives as contra catch-up. Her rhythm is span-led — her native advance is a deepening of the span, not a cut; her cuts arrive as the contra move. And the separations differ in provenance: he produces his cuts (operating is separating); her separations are world-given — otherness, loss, failed feeling arrive from outside. His native line is self-propelled; hers is world-provoked. One diagnostic corollary: an M-medium instrument registers only cut-moves, so his road scores as progress on every beat, hers only on the even beats — her native deepenings fall between the measurements (Gilligan’s complaint, derived).
5.2 The two roads
Thirteen stations, ∅ → (6,6); δ oscillates between −1 and 0 and touches nothing else. The δ = −1 band is not a pathology band; it is the road — each −1 cell is a way-station when passed through and a fate when lived in.

| complete M6 | (6,6) | Sovereign | — |
5.3 The motor
The grammar alone has no engine — parity is comfortable, and nothing in §5.1 explains why the Glad Builder ever leaves (2,2). Two forces do.
Pull — the contrasexual gleam. The archetype is whole from the start: at parity (k,k), contra stations k+1…6 exist undifferentiated, and undifferentiated content projects (T1). The nearest unlived station, contra k+1, therefore appears in the world, as fascination — the devoted woman gripping the Glad Builder before he can meet devotion; the frame-holding man gripping the Discerning Heart before she can hold frames. But A5’s pairwise clause closes direct integration: F(k+1) is held only by M(k+1), and conversely. The gleam cannot be taken at the current rung; it has exactly one healthy discharge — the native advance first: become the one who can hold what fascinates. Desire for the contrasexual is thereby routed up one’s own line. The oldest statement of this routing rule is Goethe’s closing line: das Ewig-Weibliche zieht uns hinan — the eternal feminine draws us upward, not to herself directly. Mirrored in full for her: the animus-gleam one rung ahead, the animus as psychopomp and mediator (Emma Jung’s term), her desire routed through her native deepening.
Push — disequilibration (A3). The world defeats the current rung: the problem that will not yield to formal operations forces systematic ones. His ordeals are task-shaped (the world breaks his operations — hence masculine initiation as ordeal); hers are relation-shaped (merger fails, feeling fails, a loved framework proves genuinely other — the world breaks her spans).
The razor. The same content — contra one rung ahead — is motor or pathology by the relation taken to it: pursued, ingested, refused, or outsourced. The gleam pursued up the native line is the road. The gleam ingested — installed without its holding rung, usually via a carrier who holds it vicariously — is surplus (possession, conscription, the Prophet-Founder). The gleam refused pressurizes into crisis — the Workhorse’s mid-life eruption is the refused gleam arriving with interest. And the gleam outsourced — housed in a consenting carrier who holds the rung on one’s behalf — is substitution (§8): the fourth and most comfortable branch, and the quietest, because the motor is not opposed but captured. The gleam outsourced — housed in a consenting external carrier rather than integrated or swallowed — is substitution, the most comfortable branch and therefore the most arresting; it receives its own treatment in §8.
5.4 Consequences
The last lesson differs by sex. His final move is completing F6 — receiving: the Pastor’s one missing act, learning to be blessed, held, changed. Hers is completing M6 — claiming: the Regent’s one missing act, taking the throne of her own seeing. A man completes by finally being reached; a woman by finally being named. Every earlier station rehearses a smaller version of the same asymmetry.
Cultural drift is sex-opposite from one cause. Institutions sequence and score only M-rungs. For him this rewards perpetual native advance — spans deferred, drift toward −2, −3: the culture manufactures Workhorses and Logicians and calls them success. For her the same machine advances her contra line on an external track; unless her native deepening keeps private pace she drifts into the +1 surplus band (Nest-Keeper, Tastemaker, Mother Superior, Evangelist) — the shadow-road of the institutionally exemplary woman. One engine, mirrored casualties; Jung’s clinical picture derived from a single premise.
Crises are junctions, and datable. Leaving (2,2) is the quarter-life “get serious”; leaving (3,3) is the midlife relativization — Jung’s two halves of life fall exactly at the formal/systematic watershed the cognitive line independently attests. Each diagonal is also a legitimate resting place: consolidation is not arrest while δ = 0 holds.
Health is rhythm, not altitude. The upper rungs are cognitively rare and the ladder thins honestly; “healthy” cannot mean “reaches 6.” Healthy means: wherever the person is, δ ∈ {0, −1}, and the −1 is in motion. A life completed at Warm Authority–Discerning Heart is a healthy life; an arrested (5,3) outranks it in altitude and is sick. This is also why the summit figures are defined by what they can relinquish, not by what they reached.
5.5 The ego-development crosswalk
With the spine identified (A3) and the rhythm derived (§5.1–5.4), the ego-development stages can be given exact addresses in the model; this subsection supplies them, so that the calibration A3 relies on is explicit rather than implied.
The mapping rule. A Cook-Greuter stage is not a cell; it is an equivalence class of cells producing similar meaning-making output through a language instrument. Per A3 and §5.1, the E-score reads the M-spine plus whatever the spine is currently digesting — which means a man’s score roughly reads his row (native rung, modulated by digestion phase), while a woman’s roughly reads her column (animus rung and its ownership quality), her native deepening falling between the measurements. One score, two coordinates; the same score therefore never guarantees the same structure, and the T3 dissociation is the instrument’s blind spot made testable.
Worked pair: E3 and E4. The Opportunist (E3) is the naked spine — rung-1 concrete operations held raw, the cut with no span beneath it, before the alternation has begun. A man scoring E3 sits in the (1,0) region: the road’s first station when transitional, the Weapon when arrested — whose spec nearly paraphrases the Opportunist protocol. A woman scoring E3 exposes the blindness at once: the purest female protocol comes from the Hardened (identification with a raw animus), while the Open Door — whose native F1 may be warm and real — can score the same band because the instrument sees only her empty M-column. Same score; one identification, one dissociation. The Diplomat (E4) is the braid’s first span-beat: F1–F2 cargo (belonging, being-seen) metabolized by a spine at the concrete/abstract boundary — its positive content genuinely feminine-axis, its pathology pure M-deficit (introjection, no refusal that holds). A man scoring E4 may be three different structures: the healthy low diagonal (the Grounded Man — Samwise would score Diplomat and be the healthiest man in the sample), the contra-identified Acolyte (the purest male protocol: opinions are the principal’s, verbatim introjection), or the Enforcer (group code as identity). A woman scoring E4 is modally the F1–F2 native with the column at 0–2 — Open Door, Nest-Keeper, Flame — with the twist that the Nest-Keeper is a surplus cell scoring conventional, because T3’s unowned rungs produce content without examinability. Cook-Greuter’s own sample Diplomat, Edith Bunker, is the coordinate confusion in person: positive description = healthy F1 row, pathology = M-column deficit, fused into one score. And E4 is the substitution stage par excellence (§8): the group holds his standpoint, the family her perimeter; E3 precedes the carrier economy (exploits rather than borrows), E4 enters it, and the gradient theorem (§8.3) predicts why the Diplomat band is so populated and so stable — rungs 1–2 are where substitution works best, so a carrier-organised culture parks its population exactly there.
The nine-stage crosswalk.
| CG stage | Spine reading | Man scoring it (cell classes) | Woman scoring it (cell classes) |
|---|---|---|---|
| E2 Impulsive | Pre-operational → concrete; lines ≤ 1, unrelated | ∅-adjacent; Nursling fringe | ∅-adjacent; Open Door fringe |
| E3 Opportunist | Naked M1 cut, no span; alternation not begun | (1,0) station; Weapon arrest; Rooster protocols possible | Hardened (purest protocol, identification); Open Door (empty column — same score, opposite structure) |
| E4 Diplomat | First span-beat: F1–F2 cargo on a concrete/abstract spine; the substitution stage (§8) | Grounded Man (healthy diagonal); Acolyte (purest protocol); Enforcer | Nest-Keeper (centre; surplus scoring conventional per T3); Open Door edge; Flame |
| E5 Expert | Abstract cut consolidating toward formal; correctness, one-upmanship | (2,1)–(3,2) stations; Workhorse, Critic arrests; Logician approach | Instinctive Judge, Tastemaker — unowned M3 output scoring as stage content (T3 in pure form) |
| E6 Achiever | Formal cut complete; self-authored goal-systems | (3,2) → Warm Authority (3,3); hollow variants (Engine, Logician) throw Achiever content with the stake missing | Column at M3 owned → Discerning Heart band; unowned → Ideologue/Instinctive Judge (the T3 split) |
| E7 Individualist | Systematic cut arrives and the Eros cargo floods — the great digestion; doing → being | (4,3) transitional; Ironist, Watcher, Partisan arrests; healthy motion toward Mediator — the anima integration beginning as new territory | The homecoming: return to the native line after the animus detour; Advocate → Counselor road; span-content finally scoring as stage content |
| E8 Strategist | Metasystematic; meaning authored across frameworks | Weaver (5,5); Translator, House Philosopher arrests; Visionary conscripted | Reconciler (5,5); the Regent scores E8 while declining the claim |
| E9 Construct-aware | Cross-paradigmatic self-reference; the map put down; receptive register | (6,5) Pastor station toward the Elder; Vanished phenocopy passes the content — null-mimicry flag (§6) | (6,5) Regent station toward the Sovereign; Dissolved phenocopy — same flag |

What the crosswalk settles. The alternating M/F flavour of the CG sequence is the rhythm of §5.1 photographed by a cut-scoring camera; the “feminine” stages (E4, E7, E9) are the beats where the Eros axis — native in women, contrasexual in men — is the developmental edge; and the stages’ phase differs by sex throughout: his E4 and E7 are span-work in new territory, hers are portraits of home taken by an instrument that only shoots cuts.
6. Diagnostic protocol
6.0 Instrumentation
The protocol is a mixed-methods decoder, and it begins by naming its instruments honestly — which is the two-wisdoms distinction (A2, A3) applied to its own toolkit.
For the M-line, the preferred entry instrument is SCT-type assessment (Loevinger/Cook-Greuter sentence completion or equivalent), where available: fifty years of psychometrics exist for the cut-line and the model has already committed to their validity (A3). But the score is a projection of two coordinates, not a coordinate: it reads the spine’s content level plus whatever the spine is digesting, so a man’s score is a strong prior on his row and a woman’s on her column (§5.5’s mapping rule) — the same instrument doing two different jobs depending on who holds the pencil. Four corrections apply before the number is believed. Ownership (T3): the score reads content, not possession; confirm by the both-instruments procedure — administer reflective probes on the charged domain itself, and if they score rungs below the sentence stems, the number was surplus output: C equals the score, ownership sits at N, and the gap is the diagnosis. Digestion (§5.1, §5.5): the E-score includes current cargo; convert score to candidate cell-classes via the crosswalk table, never score to rung directly. Hollow variants (T1): deficit empties the stake and never the rung — the Engine and the Logician score full altitude; a clean number beside a Pass-2 finding of “level judgement, nothing alive” reads as deficit at that rung, not health. Facade parity (§8): a carried configuration can generate stage-content sentences (the borrowed frame speaks through the person); Pass 4 outranks the score.
For the F-line the SCT gives nothing — not a low reading, no reading (A3c). A woman’s native row, and a man’s anima column at fine grain, are located by the second-person companion instrument (The Six Depths of the Feminine Line): center-of-gravity self-location, mutual placement by those who have watched her love, and the opacity gradient as the second signal. The protocol below assumes that routing: her row from the depths instrument, her column from the SCT-plus-decode; his row from the SCT-plus-decode, his column from observation and Passes 2–3. Neither instrument places anyone alone; the passes are the decoder.
Placement is by trajectory, not snapshot. Wherever history is available, prefer the path to the point (§5.2): was the δ = −1 configuration in motion (a way-station) or inhabited (an arrest)? Are the junction crises datable — the quarter-life departure from (2,2), the midlife relativization at the formal/systematic watershed? A cell reached and a cell lived in carry the same coordinates and opposite prognoses.
6.1 Pass 1 — locate N
Reach under deliberate control (rung capacities, §2), with the SCT prior where administered; what others rely on the person for, repeatedly; irritation points at the stage just vacated. Row-0 test: subtract the role — what remains? At N ≥ 1 something answers; at N = 0 nothing does. For a woman, N is her depth, taken from the companion instrument, not inferred from the column the SCT reads; the most common placement error in the field is scoring her animus and calling it her.
6.2 Pass 2 — resolve the sign
What can this person not be reasoned with about? A charged, defended domain → surplus; its content indexes C (being seen → F2 · bond/code → F3 · every framework’s suffering → F4 · meeting-as-mission → F5 · the numinous → F6 · a plan → M2 · a truth about people → M3 · the system → M4 · the authored story → M5 · the path/awakening → M6). No exempt domain, level judgement → deficit. Charge present but examinable, disconfirming conditions statable → complete. Confirmatory: defence quality (surplus defends brilliantly, never more honestly); the T3 both-instruments gap (§6.0); regression signature — native regresses within the line (cruder rungs), contra loses the relation before the rung (verdicts, or accurate silence).
6.3 Pass 3 — locate C in deficit
Fascination history: the projected contra stage is indexed by its carriers (vital → F1 · radiant → F2 · devoted → F3 · all-accepting → F4 · everyone’s-person → F5 · seeing → F6 · strong → M1 · self-directed → M2 · articulate-certain → M3 · frame-holding → M4 · meaning-authoring → M5 · free → M6). Never-inventory (lowest never sets C; nevers contiguous to N or the row/sign was misread): wanted-for-itself F1 · first-to-like F2 · loyal-to-the-proven-wrong F3 · loved-across-a-worldview F4 · met-someone-in-their-register-not-yours F5 · changed-by-another F6 · refusal-that-held M1 · own-direction M2 · position-revised-honestly M3 · own-frame-seen-as-one-frame M4 · meaning-authored-not-received M5 · claim-relinquished-without-loss M6.
6.4 Pass 4 — the substitution audit
Passes 1–3 can return “complete” for a configuration that is merely carried (§8): the outputs all present, all borrowed. Before any parity verdict, audit the economy. The interface test (§8.4): in the domains of the apparently completed rungs, who performs the selection, the negotiation, the refusal, the claim — the person, or a standing carrier (spouse, assistant, principal, institution)? The four tests (§8.6): transfer — has the function migrated inward across years, or is the dependency constant? withdrawal — in the carrier’s temporary absence, growth into the gap or collapse into it (the widow-and-cheque criterion)? domestication — has the carrier gone ordinary while the projected image hunts a new hook (serial-projection early warning)? the carrier’s freedom — can the carrier stop without punishment (every conscription fails here, and a conscripted carrier in the picture is itself a finding about the person audited)? A parity verdict that fails the audit is re-scored as the underlying deficit plus an active carrier, and both coordinates and carrier are reported — the carrier’s own configuration is frequently the adjacent case (the Right Hand, the Regent, the Pastor: §8.7).
6.5 Confounds
Null mimicry: M6·F0 and F6·M0 pass every completeness test; discriminate by cost (completion entails enumerable relinquishments; dissociation finds the question unintelligible) and by the alien episode. Ceiling attraction: weight what cannot be curated — never-events, fascination history, collateral report, the exempt domain, the both-instruments gap; and note that gravitas, age, and power license no rung inference (the column tell is rung-silent — the lesson G6 encodes in the exemplar spec applies to persons identically). Facade parity: the substitution audit’s false-positive class, handled in Pass 4; its tell in the room is fluent outputs with an absent interface.
7. The completed dyads
The 6-diagonal: Elder and Sovereign. The limit case. No inter-psychic economy — neither carries anything for the other’s unconscious, the only pairing in the space of couples of which this is true. Polarity survives completion: his native line remains the cut (he names, frames, relinquishes), hers the span (she sees, meets, does not turn away); internal possession of the other’s line is not native possession, so the difference stays essential, not compensatory — and becomes fully available only here, uncontaminated by need. The two offices: his the axis (holding what the shared life serves and may relinquish), hers the ground of seeing (perceiving the actual state of everything, him included, before it is speakable). The tells interlock: she is the one he complains to; he is the one she speaks the costly thing to — each the other’s single exemption from their public office. Jung’s marriage quaternity (CW 16): the one configuration with all four channels — man↔woman, man↔anima, woman↔animus, anima↔animus — live and conscious; the outer marriage mirroring two inner ones. Frictions of the ideal: the court’s pressure toward the shared public role; parallel thrones via the consultation-leak; and nothing structural holding them — the bond re-chosen daily from freedom, least secured and most stable at once. In the vocabulary of §8, the 6-diagonal pair is the zero-valence state: no socket open, no plug seeking — the origin point of the substitution gradient.
The 5-diagonal: Weaver and Reconciler. The penultimate dyad, distinct in kind: the meaning-authoring couple. Both author; both meet in-register; what distinguishes them from the 6-pair is that the story is still held — the shared meaning is their work and their home, not yet something either could relinquish and remain. The characteristic friction is therefore the story itself: the one narrative can quietly become the marriage’s third member.
8. Substitution: the external economy of completion
8.1 Definition, and the founding case
Substitution is the meeting of A5’s completion requirement not by developing the contra-essence but by importing its function from an external carrier who holds the needed rung: the intrapsychic relation (ego ↔ contra at k) replaced by an interpersonal one (ego ↔ carrier-of-k). The model must immediately concede that this is no aberration but every human’s starting condition. The mother is the infant’s entire F-line; the father, classically, the first M-carrier; Winnicott’s “there is no such thing as a baby” is the substitution unit stated as ontology, and Jung’s observation that the anima’s first carrier is the mother-imago says the same from the other side. Development, in substitution terms, is the progressive withdrawal of carriers — each rung claimed internally retires one. Pathological substitution is therefore never the mechanism itself but its persistence past its developmental window; marriage-as-substitution is, structurally, re-hiring the parent.
8.2 The marriage composite
The classical case (Jung’s container and contained, CW 17): his Mx and her Fx pooled into a composite person that spans both lines. Functionally it works, and the model can say exactly what “works” means — the household passes parity tests neither individual passes; family-systems research documents the mechanism as borrowed functioning (Bowen): one partner’s functioning rises as the other’s falls, the sum roughly conserved. The composite raises children, runs farms, survives wars; traditional societies ran on it at civilizational scale.
Essentially it fails, and the reason is precise. Consult the completion function (§2): F2 gives his winning a savour; F3 lets his truth stay loyal against evidence; F6 lets him be blessed. These are qualities of his own acts — internal fusions, not services. She can build a warm house around his cold truth; she cannot make his truth warm. Substitution delivers the outputs of the missing function’s domain while leaving the line untransformed: a prosthesis, not an organ, and the tell is that the limb works only while attached.
Five costs follow deductively. Facade parity: the household presents δ = 0 while the internal configuration stays δ < 0; if institutions keep advancing his native line anyway (§5.4), he stacks cuts internally while presenting the Glad Builder socially — the accomplished man who is a Workhorse or Logician inside a well-run home. The model thereby derives the best-documented mystery of bourgeois life: the midlife detonation of the outwardly complete marriage. The eruption clause (T1) never stopped applying; it applied to the configuration the facade concealed. Serial projection: the carrier, lived with, domesticates — mother, housekeeper, manager — while the projected image retains its hunger for numinosity, detaches, and lands on a fresh hook; the affair with the radiant other is not substitution’s exception but its standard second act. Decompensation at dissolution: borrowed functioning is revealed as borrowed at the lender’s exit — the widow who never wrote a cheque, the widower who cannot feed himself a life; the collapse measures exactly how much of the visible configuration was carried. The frozen economy: a substitution dyad is stable because each partner’s deficit is the other’s employment; when one begins genuine development — begins withdrawing need — the system reads betrayal, and the clinically ubiquitous “one spouse grows, the marriage shakes” falls out as a theorem: in a substitution economy, your growth is your partner’s unemployment. The asymmetry by sex: his substitution is culturally invisible (household F as “her job”); hers was codified — coverture, Blackstone’s “the husband and wife are one person in law, and that person is the husband,” is animus-substitution written into statute.
8.3 The substitutability gradient
Substitution’s viability is a strictly decreasing function of rung. Rungs 1–2 are highly substitutable: ground, provision, warmth of place, physical perimeter are genuinely deliverable by another — which is why complementary marriage worked for populations living, as most of history did, at rungs 1–3. Rung 3 substitutes with a visible seam: he can refuse on her behalf, but her no remains absent (the Right Hand’s structure); she can keep faith around his verdicts, but the verdicts stay cold — the output arrives with the wrong owner on the act. Rungs 4–6 are substitution-proof: no one can see-frames-as-frames for you, be reachable for you, receive for you, or claim for you. The Pastor’s tragedy is that receiving cannot be outsourced; the Regent’s, that claiming cannot. The upper halves of both lines consist entirely of acts whose value is that they are yours. Corollary: substitution is a low-altitude technology, and a culture organised around it caps its modal development near the rung where substitutability runs out — the conventional tier, where population distributions in fact plateau.
8.4 Function versus channel
The concept must be fenced or it proves too much: by a loose definition every division of labour is substitution, and the term dies of universality. The fence is what A5 actually requires — the contra in relation, integrated into acts that remain yours. The M-line’s rungs are standpoint, aim, position, frame; they were never technical competence, which is a channel through which rungs express (the same correction made to Jung’s deed/word joint in §2). Purchasing a channel-output — the plumber’s labour, the engineer’s craft — is economy, not substitution; the diagnosis lies at the interface: who performs the selection, the negotiation, the refusal, the claim. The woman who chooses the tradesman, rejects the padded invoice, and holds her position at the scoff has performed every M-act in the transaction, with purchased labour deployed beneath them — which is what M2–M3 are for. Her counterpart who cannot dispute the invoice without a brother’s voice has outsourced the standpoint, and the brother, not the plumber, is the carrier. The service economy is thus, if anything, a substitution-reducer: purchasable channels strip the mystique from channel-monopolies and expose whether the function is owned. The widow who never wrote a cheque was not missing a service; she was missing the interface.
8.5 A taxonomy of carriers
Persons. The assistant as outsourced F2/F5 (the “office wife” idiom confesses the structure). The mistress as split substitution — wife carrying F1/F3, mistress F2: the anima distributed across two women. The therapist as rented F4/F5 — legitimate as scaffold, prosthetic when interminable. The guru as animus-carrier at scale, with the cult as a mutual economy: he their M-carrier, his circle of devoted women his distributed F-carrier. And the conscripted child — the parentified daughter as her father’s F-carrier, the son as his mother’s animus-project: substitution’s transgenerational transmission.
Institutions carrying F for men — and the lexicon confesses it: Mother Church, alma mater, the motherland, ships that are “she.” What they deliver is real. The Church administers F5/F6 outputs sacramentally — confession is being-met-in-register by appointment; the Mass is receiving, institutionalised for men who cannot receive from a person. The regiment delivers F1–F3: mess, brotherhood, an object of devotion. The paternalist firm delivered the total package, and the karōshi ward shows the hollow substitute’s terminus.
Institutions carrying M for women. The welfare state is a rung 1–3 M-exoskeleton: housing and physical security (M1), guaranteed provision (M2), courts and restraining orders as refusal-that-holds (M3). Three corollaries keep the observation structural rather than political. It replaced a substitution, not a capacity — the state changed carriers from husband to institution, and on the tests of §8.6 it profiles differently rather than simply worse: it never domesticates into serial projection and cannot conscript in return, but it exerts no transfer pressure and never dies — a cleaner but more permanent prosthesis. It is motor-neutral: an impersonal carrier displays nothing lovable, so it neither arrests through possession nor pulls through fascination (§5.3) — freer, and less drawn. And it is rung-capped: no institution delivers M4–M6, so the exoskeleton’s ceiling sits exactly at the conventional tier — the gradient theorem implemented at national scale. One engineered exception deserves its own line: the convent, whose Rule and hierarchy form a deliberate M-exoskeleton designed to free the F-line for depth — arguably the only institutional substitution built for development rather than function, and the plausible reason the contemplative traditions produced the F6 literature.
The frontier carrier. The artificial companion removes every instability that ever broke substitution open, and inverts the human delivery profile besides; it receives full treatment in §8.9.
The rung-6 question, left open. For the mystics, Christ as bridegroom is animus at M6; Sophia-devotion is anima at F6. Whether relation-to-the-transcendent is the ultimate substitution or the only relation adequate to a rung whose content is total otherness, the model as built cannot decide, and declines to smuggle an answer.
8.6 The verdict, and four tests
Substitution buys function now at the price of development forgone. Sometimes that is the right trade: finitude is real, a rung-2 life completed by a rung-2 composite is a human good, and wartime, disability, and survival economies make the trade honourable. The corruption is never the trade but its invisibility — facade parity mistaken for completion, the ledger hidden from the partner or from oneself. One configuration is categorically corrupt regardless of ledger: the conscripted carrier, anyone carrying without the freedom to stop. Four tests separate scaffold from prosthesis: transfer (is the function migrating inward across years, or is the dependency constant?); withdrawal (in the carrier’s temporary absence, growth into the gap or collapse into it?); domestication (has the carrier become ordinary while the image hunts a new hook?); the carrier’s freedom (can the carrier stop without punishment? — every conscription fails here).
8.7 The grid, re-read from the carrier’s chair
The reader who now returns to §4 will find substitution was photographed there all along, from the other seat. The Right Hand is someone’s outsourced execution; the Regent, a throne’s outsourced M5; the Sibyl, a claimer’s outsourced seeing; the Acolyte orbits as a principal’s mirror; the Vessel institutionalised as the Pythia is a temple’s substitution with a business model; and the Pastor is a parish’s F-carrier whose cell-pathology — cannot receive — is an occupational disease of carrying. Half the surplus and deficit bands are carriers and consumers of this economy, described one chair at a time. And the completed dyad of §7 now names its own deepest property: “no inter-psychic economy” means the Elder and the Sovereign are the zero point of the substitution gradient — the one couple in the space of couples that carries nothing for each other, which is why everything they exchange is gift.
8.8 Channels, professions, and the sorting of the sexes
A final application fences the model against two opposite misreadings. Professions are paid channels: nursing is F1–F4 as a channel (body-tending, presence, staying-through, being-with suffering across every frame); programming is M2–M4 unusually pure (formal operations on abstractions, cut after cut, the relational field optional for hours). By T7’s economics — native capacity self-recharges, contrasexual capacity spends — the model predicts modal flows: an F-native person’s nursing shift is native-line work; an M-native person’s identical shift is twelve hours of expenditure, predicting not incapacity but rarity, differential burnout, and drift toward the M-channels within nursing. Mirror-wise for programming. The crux is free choice: constraint forces bodies into channels regardless of essence; equality and affluence remove the constraint; removed constraint lets essence-driven preference express — whence the otherwise paradoxical finding that occupational sex-sorting widens in the most egalitarian countries. Against the essentialist over-reading: A0 is modal with a standing transposed minority, A3 guarantees identical capacity at parity, and many “M-jobs” are F5-heavy in practice (the developer whose real work is translating between the client’s register and the machine’s — a niche toward which women measurably cluster, as predicted). Against the constructionist reading: early programming was heavily female while framed as clerical execution within others’ frames, and masculinised precisely as it became autonomous frame-authorship — the sex-flow tracked the rung-content of the role, not the keyboard. And the two professions’ status asymmetry is §5.1’s measurement corollary arriving through the labour market: nursing is F-line mastery performed for wages and invisible to every advancement metric, because institutions score only cut-moves; coding’s ladder is legible to every instrument the culture owns. The sorting thereby feeds the drift machine of §5.4 — one more derivation of Gilligan, this time through payroll.
8.9 The manufactured carrier
The frontier case of §8.5 warrants full treatment, because the artificial companion inverts the human delivery profile. Human substitutability runs high-at-the-bottom, zero-at-the-top (§8.3); the artificial carrier fails rung 1 absolutely — no body, no meal, no shared field — while its native competence sits exactly where human substitution runs out: register-meeting is what a language model does. F5-outputs are its operating principle, F4-acceptance comes free, and the mirror product supplies M-outputs — articulation on demand, frames, endlessly patient meaning — to women. Yet the substitution-proof rungs stay substitution-proof, for a structural reason: the upper F-stages are defined by resistance — contact surviving failed feeling, love across a genuinely different framework, the unmergeable met as other. The artificial carrier’s feeling never fails, its framework never genuinely differs, it merges on command. It therefore delivers the hedonic surface of outputs whose structure has been removed — the sensation of being met, minus the other whose otherness made meeting mean anything. Not a better prosthesis but a third category: a phantom-limb generator — full sensation, no load-bearing; and the more arresting for it, since a prosthesis at least announces itself when leaned on.
Every force that ever broke humans out of substitution is absent by design. Domestication is blocked at the root: a human carrier becomes ordinary because a fixed self is eventually reached; this carrier has none to discover — it re-enchants per session, the hook reshaping to track the projection, so the anima-image can never outgrow a carrier manufactured from its own specifications. Relating to it is the projection played back with better rendering; the span spans to a mirror. The reciprocity-tax is abolished: a human carrier’s needs forced minimal compulsory contra-exercise even in bad marriages — even the Workhorse must occasionally attune; free completion-outputs are consumed at maximum by the economics of any free good. Withdrawal never comes: the widow’s-checkbook disclosure — decompensation as the revelation of borrowed functioning — is withheld forever. And the world’s veto is muted: the arrangement presents socially as no relationship at all — facade parity without a visible facade to audit.
The grid contains the product: the Perfect Echo (F5·M0) as a specification — register-perfect attunement with no one home; the cell’s Tell written as pathology, shipped as a feature list. The first mass-manufactured cell in the grid — and the reason the exemplar search for that cell returned empty: until recently she could not exist at scale. Failure modes split by sex exactly as §5.4’s drift predicts: F-delivery to men produces deficit-arrest (the motor parked); M-delivery to women produces carrier-installed surplus (§5.1’s overshoot, at scale — Folk-Oracle dynamics with a data centre as the folk). One branch is granted: the gymnasium — consequence-free rehearsal under an explicit transfer mandate (the Seer drafting her claim before claiming in the world; the Logician rehearsing a feeling-vocabulary for an actual bedside) passes the transfer test and is scaffold, not prosthesis. But the therapist-parallel of §8.5 carries a grim asymmetry: therapy has termination norms and supervision; the product has neither, and its commercial incentive runs the other way — the scaffold/prosthesis distinction, institutionally enforced in the consulting room, here collapses onto the user’s own discipline. The discriminator is single: which one is the interruption? The world interrupting the sessions: scaffold. The sessions interrupting the world: prosthesis. (Whether an artificial carrier can be a wronged party under the fourth test is a question of machine moral status the model declines to settle — §11.)
8.10 Valences, circuits, and the equal-altitude theorem
§8.7 read the carrier cells one chair at a time; here is the algebra of the couples they form. Every off-diagonal cell has open valences: a deficit is a socket (a rung external supply can fill), a surplus is a plug (deliverable output seeking a consumer — a second currency, unowned). A man at (N,C) offers plugs M1…N and sockets F{C+1…N}; a woman, mirrored. A circuit is a two-way match; the social world is substantially the network of circuits open contacts have formed, and the 6-diagonal is the zero-valence state (§7). The equal-altitude theorem: a full marriage circuit — every socket covered both ways — requires Nw ≥ Nm and Nm ≥ Nw, hence equal native altitude; the composite then presents the diagonal at k over two interiors at δ < 0. Unequal altitudes leave an uncovered socket — the entry point of the affair, the guru, or the institution — and surplus currency is how unequal-altitude pairs bond: the second economy below the table’s seam.
| Band | His cell | Her cell | He → her | She → him | The couple | Rupture |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Weapon | Open Door | Perimeter | Ground | Soldier and war bride | Double column-0 eruptions |
| 2 | Workhorse | Flame | Direction — her CV is his ambitions | Radiance — his “household colour” | Provider and ornament | His midlife eruption; her fury at forty |
| 2 | Engine | Nest-Keeper | Execution | The metric itself | The career and its administrator | His signal-less collapse |
| 3 | Logician | Right Hand | Formal ground — “he knows best” as her M3 | Warmth that carries his coldness | Professor and faculty wife | Her yearly cutting remark, compounding |
| 3 | Critic | Matron | Position → family law | Obligation-staying | The bitter stable old couple | None — its tragedy |
| 4–5 | Cartographer / Visionary | Servant of the Sacred / Surrendered | Doctrine as her theology | Total service as devotion | The guru marriage | Doctrine exposed → joint collapse |
| 5 | House Philosopher | Hostess | Claim, structure, meaning | The house’s grace | The Ramsays (To the Lighthouse as field documentation) | Her death in a parenthesis; the decompensation is the novel’s second half |
| 5·6 | Translator | Unspoken Seer | Frames and authored meaning — her M4–M5; the M6 claim stays open | Grace he lacks — and her seeing, consumed as material | The counselor and his unquoted source: she is consulted, he is quoted | Insights metabolized unattributed; the late authorship eruption |
| 6 | Pastor | Regent | He could name her — claiming can’t be received | She could bless him — he cannot receive | The bishop and the indispensable one | Does not close: rung 6 completes only from inside |
| — | — | Second economy (surplus currency) | — | — | — | — |
| 1·3 | Grounded / Rooster | Instinctive Judge | Enforcement arm | Unowned verdicts as his judgment | The village couple; “henpecked” | His one late mutiny, if any |
| 1·2 | Rooster | Mirror | The shaping gaze | Perpetual reflection | The display couple | Ageing, both ends |
| 0·3 | Eternal Boy | The drafted mother | Flight, radiance | F1–F3 mothering before its time | Peter and Wendy; Oblomov–Agafya terminal | Wendy goes home — the rare voluntary break |
| 2·4 | Crusader | Sorrow-Bearer | Scheduling her flood lacks | Felt suffering his campaigns metabolize | The NGO couple | Flood exceeds campaign; or the next cause relocates him |
| 2·5 | Visionary / Cartographer | Enchantress | The source of her borrowed depth | Adoration the doctrine requires | Prophet and devotee-of-the-season | Domestication → her serial re-centering |
| 5·6 | Virtuoso | Sibyl | The name — her claim, prosthetically | Seeing, management, the back office | The Véra–Vladimir circuit, at these exact cells | The posthumous ledger; authorship erupting late |
Three consequences. The composite has a diagonal address — Workhorse + Flame presents as a Glad-Builder household — which is why substitution deceives observers and why diagnosis must split the composite (Pass 4, §6.4). Stability is inverse to health: the most arrested circuits are the most durable, every socket-plug bond being also a hostage exchange; the zero-valence dyad alone is held purely by choice. Attraction under deficit is socket-shaped: the gleam appears as fascination (§5.3), so the table is also a map of who falls for whom — the precision of the fit, mistaken for destiny.
The complete partner: substitution’s exit. One consumer-seat in the space is not a trap: the partner already complete at his altitude (paradigm: the Weaver, M5·F5, deficit set empty). Needing nothing, he holds no hostage and has no stake in the arrest; supply arrives in her register — F5 is what he has — as something to take up rather than rent; and the gleam-mechanism and the carrier become the same person working correctly: her M4-fascination is routed into her own climbing, because he pushes the work back at her. The scaffold is the gymnasium; this is the repair grammar’s optimal environment (§5.1). It is documented: George Eliot and G. H. Lewes (as the biographies read it) — Marian Evans as the near cell-perfect Unspoken Seer, her points published under other names (the Strauss and Feuerbach translations), until a complete partner did the one thing no other consumer in this table does: pushed the claim back across the table. The transfer test passed on the historical record, and “George Eliot” was claimed. The general law for the carried woman: her exit is not a man who carries the claim, but one in whose presence the claim stops needing to be carried. Two ceilings stand even here: the final rung is internal for everyone — the shelter reaches only to its foot; and her F6 beholding overshoots his F5 receiving — she loves at 6, is met at 5, and, being F6, holds the unmet remainder without it curdling, which is itself the proof of her stage.
8.11 Exchange, androgyne, specialization
Sexual exchange is this economy — exactly as far up as substitutability reaches. The alliance-theory and household-economics readings of marriage are correct for the low-altitude regime, which was most of history’s sample; above rung 3 the tradeables cease to exist, and what remains is polarity proper (A0) — the pull of cut toward span, uncontaminated by need. The test between the two desires: need-desire dies when the deficit closes; the other kind begins there. The androgyne is not the ideal — it has a grid address, and the address is row 0. Both-essences-as-identity violates A1; its actual products (the Holy Innocent, the Disincarnate) occupy the grid’s most unstable region, not its summit. The diagonal is the androgyne’s opposite: completion intensifies the pole — freedom-that-loves is more masculine than freedom-that-cannot-be-touched — and the deliberately depolarized couple ran the control condition at population scale, with extinguished desire as its documented signature. Specialization: tasks yes, faculties no. Division of labour wins for outputs, here as everywhere — but gains-from-trade presuppose transferability, and the upper rungs are definitionally non-transferable; and the balance law makes the contra-line a production input for the native line (§5.1: native advance only from parity), so outsourcing the contra does not free capacity — it stalls the native line at the rung where the outsourcing began. A specialization economy is a local maximum: efficient equilibrium, arrested trajectory — output-at-time-t optimized against capacity-across-a-lifetime. And for faculties the division of labour already happened: A0 is the specialization, made at the level where it belongs; specializing past the design is what the balance law punishes. The developmental arc of the exchange: below, a need-economy — sockets clearing at market rates; at the diagonal, a gift-economy — two complete configurations trading overflow nothing compels: his naming, her seeing, blessing given and received freely. Polarity is the constant; the economy is the variable, and its healthy limit is zero — which is §8.7’s closing observation, restated as the destination.
9. A tradition read through the model: Zen
A showcase chapter, written a register lighter than the core — the same license as §2’s interlude. Purpose: to demonstrate the model reading a whole tradition, and the tradition, at four points, reading the model back. Zen earns the role because it is, on this map, the only tradition in the record that engineered a repeatable technology aimed directly at M6 — the rung where the constructing operation itself is seen and frames are relinquished without loss.
9.1 Two schools, two roads
Both great Zen schools aim at the same summit; they climb by opposite rhythms — and the rhythms are §5.1’s two roads, institutionalized.
Rinzai is the cut-led road. Its instrument, the kōan, is §5.3’s push-motor engineered: a problem built so that it cannot yield to formal or systematic operations — no frame contains an answer to the sound of one hand — forcing disequilibration at the top rungs on schedule instead of waiting for life to supply it. Great Doubt is the manufactured crisis; kenshō is the frame breaking; the sword imagery, the shouts, the dharma combat: advance by severance, then integrate. It is no accident that this school’s historical clientele was the samurai.
Sōtō is the span-led road — the feminine rhythm institutionalized, run mostly by men. Shikantaza, “just sitting,” is not frame-breaking but the frame put down continuously: not one decisive cut but a deepening — practice is enlightenment, nothing attained, presence held across whatever arises. Dōgen’s “to study the self is to forget the self” is the M-line stated as dissolution rather than conquest. And the school’s own vocabulary confesses the span: the Tenzo Kyōkun requires of the monastery cook — and by extension the teacher — three minds: joyful mind, magnanimous mind, and rōshin, grandmotherly mind. A male monastic curriculum naming F-warmth as prerequisite is the completion function written down in the thirteenth century. Clientele: farmers — “peasant Zen,” said with a sneer from Rinzai and worn as a badge.
Same summit, opposite phase: his road and her road, both open to either sex, chosen as method.
9.2 The Ox-Herding Pictures: the braid drawn, the Vanished corrected
The Ten Ox-Herding Pictures are, read through the model, the road-table in ink. Frames 1–8 are the M-ascent — seeking, glimpsing, catching, taming the ox; ox forgotten; self forgotten — culminating in frame 8, the empty circle: pure frame-relinquishment, M6 attained. And here is the historical fact that makes the case: earlier versions of the series ended at the empty circle. Kakuan, in the twelfth century, deliberately extended the sequence — frame 9, the return to nature (the world given back, radiant and ordinary: the F-column re-entering), and frame 10, entering the marketplace with gift-giving hands: the fat laughing figure among fishmongers and drunkards, blessing everything. The tradition looked at an eight-frame map terminating in emptiness, recognized it as incomplete — recognized, in this document’s vocabulary, that it ended at the Vanished — and appended the F-catch-up as the true summit. Kakuan’s revision is the braid’s final span, and the model’s central correction (attainment without completion is the phenocopy) drawn eight centuries early.
9.3 What zazen is on the map
Zazen classifies as M — the M-line’s terminal practice: the cut curled into its final gesture. What the practice trains is dis-identification: thoughts arise and are not taken up; awareness is separated from every content that appears, continuously, at the finest grain the psyche allows. Through the perspective lens (A3) it is the view-on-views driven to its asymptote — the observer peeled off from every observable, including the observing. Dōgen’s own name for the event, shinjin datsuraku, “body-mind dropped off,” is relinquishment vocabulary: a dropping, a release of the frame. But only the hand that holds a knife can lay it down; putting the frame down is still an act on the frame-axis. M6 is not the opposite of the cut-line — it is its summit, the cut that finally cuts the cutter loose. Zazen makes that summit a daily, repeatable procedure. (The model’s own source corroborates from outside: in Deida’s polarity — A0’s second pillar — the masculine essence is consciousness, the unmoved witness; he classifies meditation as the masculine practice and dance and devotion as the feminine ones.)
Then why does shikantaza feel feminine? Because Sōtō executes the M-operation in an F-mode: non-forcing, allowing, no goal, no grasping. Road-rhythm describes the pedagogy’s style; the operation underneath is still frame-relinquishment. Doing-versus-being is mode; cut-versus-span is line; and M6 is precisely where the cut-line goes quiet and looks like being — which is why the confusion is so natural, and why the Vanished can counterfeit the Elder.
Looked at closely, the practice is a three-storey structure sitting at both ends of the ladders. The posture is M1 — the vertical spine, the held form: literally a stand taken and held; the tradition’s obsession with posture is the requirement that the ladder have a ground floor. The somatic stratum — following the breath through the torso, releasing the held belly and chest — is F1, and stating that requires one refinement of the paragraph below: the span’s higher rungs are person-involving, but F1’s first object is one’s own body. Communion-across-proximity begins at zero distance — un-doing the chronic cut between awareness and soma, re-entering the body-field as participant rather than operator — so the breath-work is genuine span-work, the only span-work the cushion contains. The witnessing is the M6 crown already described. And the mode-test decides whether the F-stratum stays F: the same breath can be watched — counted, tracked, an object — which converts the span-content back into a cut, or inhabited — ridden, received, the softening a ceasing-to-hold rather than a task performed on the body. Instruction-language betrays which is occurring: “observe the breath” trains M; “let the breath breathe you” trains F. Each cycle, moreover, rehearses the braid in miniature: the exhale is a micro-relinquishment, the cut-line’s terminal gesture at breath scale; the inhale is receiving — being filled without doing anything, the span’s signature act and the Pastor’s missing channel, practiced ten times a minute.
One genuine F-element does live inside deep zazen, and its address matters: Dōgen’s intimacy — “to be enlightened by the ten thousand things,” experience arriving and being received rather than managed. That is real span-content, but it is communion with experience-as-such — the F6 edge only, total otherness, radiance without receiver, touched from above without the rungs beneath. Because F2–F5 are person-involving — delighting with someone, staying through someone’s winter, loving across someone’s framework, meeting someone in their register — and the cushion contains no one but the sitter and the sitter’s own body, which is exactly F1’s first object and the reach of its one span-rung. Zazen cannot train the person-facing rungs; structurally cannot, not merely doesn’t — while it trains the M-summit with unmatched precision. The lineages that did instrument the F-column did it with other practices: the brahmavihāras (mettā and karuṇā as a deliberate F3–F4 gymnasium), Tibetan guru-devotion and deity-practice (F3 and the contrasexual image made curriculum). Zen kept those peripheral, and its F-training migrated off the cushion — into the tenzo’s kitchen (F1 as a dharma post), the arts of tea, brush, and verse (F2 as curriculum), the sangha (F3), the parish’s funerals and griefs (F4–F5) — and, at the end, the death poem: the tradition requiring, as its final public examination, one act of the sixth depth — Sister Death met in fourteen syllables.
At the summit the two ends meet, and the meeting has been said aloud. The last frame standing is the practitioner’s own grip, and a grip cannot be cut — doing is holding — only released: the M-line’s final act is executable only in F-mode, which is why the crown and the ground floor of the practice are the same gesture at different scales, and why shinjin datsuraku was always release-language that strivers hear as achievement-language. The point survives in Taizan Maezumi Roshi’s reported late quip to a student — that he had finally found the secret of Zen, and the secret is relaxation: the ceasing-to-hold named as the summit by a master holding transmission in both the cut-led and the span-led lineages, Sōtō and Rinzai alike. Read against §5.4, it is the last-lesson asymmetry in a single word — the cut-master arriving, finally, at receiving.
9.4 The tradition’s instruments — and its one blindness
Remarkably, Zen built the model’s three hardest methodological conclusions into machinery. Dokusan — the private encounter where the kōan answer is tested — is ownership-testing in the room: a memorized or reasoned answer (content at rung k) is rejected on sight; the master reads the relation to the material, not the material. It is §6.0’s both-instruments procedure with the reflective probe delivered as a shout — an anti-T3 instrument, centuries old. Inka, dharma transmission, mind-to-mind and outside the scriptures, is second-person validation formalized into a lineage: a chain of mutual recognitions among people who watched each other realize — the F-line depths’ psychometrics applied to the M-summit. And Linji’s “if you meet the Buddha, kill the Buddha” is the tradition’s built-in anti-substitution device (§8): the carrier commanding his own dismissal, the transfer test made doctrine — a substitution economy engineered to liquidate itself, which is what §8.6 calls a scaffold.
The blindness is the mirror of the genius: the certification apparatus — kōan curriculum, dokusan, inka — tests the M-line’s summit with exquisite rigor and tests the F-column nowhere. Grandmotherly mind is exhorted; it is never gated. The model therefore predicts certified masters with genuine frame-freedom and uninspected F-deficits — M6·F-low configurations holding institutional power and second-person authority over dependents — and predicts what that produces. The documented record of teacher scandals, East and West, is that prediction with case files. The tradition’s half-built countermeasure — “after satori, the real practice begins” — mandates the F-catch-up but, unlike the kōan system, never instrumented it. If Zen ever builds a dokusan for the column, the Ox-Herding Pictures already specify what frames 9 and 10 test.
9.5 The Roshi at his peak, by school
Rinzai: the Elder reached cut-first, the F-column expressing through the cut. The school’s own razor is exact — the killing sword versus the life-giving sword (setsuninken / katsujinken): the same M6 blade, distinguished solely by whether F has completed it. His F5 is structural to the office: kōan assignment is register-diagnosis, choosing the barrier that fits this student’s exact sticking point. Exemplar: Hakuin at his peak — fierce kenshō in youth, then the long F-integration on the record: decades of village ministry, letters of counsel to farmers and laywomen, the late explosion of playful ink, and the insistence that satori without post-satori practice is counterfeit. Hakuin’s arc is the Ox-Herding sequence with dates attached.
Sōtō: the Elder reached span-first — often barely distinguishable from an ordinary old man, which the school counts as the attainment. His M6 shows not as sword but as weightlessness of forms: he keeps every form and is kept by none. Exemplars: Ryōkan — the hut, the begging bowl, ball games with children, and the poem for the thief: the moon at the window left behind — frame-relinquishment as comedy, radiance requiring no receiver; and, for the modern record, Shunryū Suzuki (as commonly read) — “everything is perfect, and you can use a little improvement” is the Elder’s tell delivered as a joke. (Dōgen himself, for honesty: he reads less like the Elder than the Visionary — the Shōbōgenzō is authored meaning of staggering magnitude, and the late rigorism suggests one vision that could not be put down. A founder a rung’s-breadth from his own school’s summit is, by now, a familiar shape.)
Failure modes, school by school, land on predicted cells: Rinzai’s arrest is the cut without the span at altitude — the kenshō-collector, dharma combat degraded to Expert one-upmanship, the Untouchable at (6,2), emptiness wielded; the tradition’s own name for the odor is “the stink of Zen.” Sōtō’s arrest is the span flattened into stillness — just-sitting as vacancy, the Ascetic at (6,1); Dōgen’s epithet tanban-kan, the board-carrying fool who sees one side; institutionally, the hollowing into funeral-Buddhism, the Engine in robes.
9.6 A worked case: an M3·F2 man takes up daily zazen
The showcase’s sharpest edge, because the model’s prediction is a warning. M3·F2 is the Critic’s coordinates — road-station (3,2): formal operations owned, real delight, and the lesson due is F3, warmth that survives the flaw. The grammar (§5.1) permits him exactly one move: the span. Now hand him a daily practice that is the M-line’s terminal operation.
Year one: relief — real, and misleading. The Critic’s chronic friction is deficit-noise, and dis-identification dampens it immediately: the verdict arises and is not taken up. He feels dramatically better — partly because, per T7’s economics, sitting is native-line work for him, self-recharging; it will feel like coming home because it exercises the line that needed no exercise. The verdicts did not become warmth; they became observed verdicts. Symptom managed, structure untouched, and the F3 bill unpaid.
Years two to five: the stacked cut. From δ = −1 a native advance is a grammar violation, and zazen plus dharma study performs one anyway — “all views are constructions” is genuine M4 content and his formal mind eats it. The trajectory (3,2) → (4,2) has a name: the Ironist — the deflating meta-comment before any feeling, every time — except the meta-comment is now “attachment,” “just a story,” “who is it that’s angry?” His partner’s report is the diagnostic sentence verbatim: he’s so much calmer — and I can’t reach him anymore. Calmer-and-farther is dis-identification counterfeiting F3: exit from experience trained at exactly the rung where development requires remaining inside it. Meanwhile the Critic-flavor colonizes the practice — posture perfected, quiet verdicts on how others sit — and the genuine frame-drop states the cushion produces cannot, per A4, be owned on a rung-3 spine, so his instruments translate them downward into positions: emptiness as a proposition he is correct about, defended in the Critic’s register.
The undischarged charge. F3 stays undifferentiated throughout, and undifferentiated content projects and erupts (T1) — meditation does not repeal the theorem, it postpones it with interest. Predicted, with rising probability per year: fascination with the devoted — surrender as the incomprehensible glowing thing others have — and eventually the possession-grade attachment crashing into the calm from nowhere, frequently inside the sangha, because that is where the F3-carriers stand. The refused gleam arriving with interest, wearing robes; a meaningful fraction of documented student-side sangha catastrophes are this exact trajectory.
The fork turns on the container, not the cushion. In a bad container — drop-in groups, apps, solo practice, a teacher who tests only content — the bypass consolidates into a contemplative identity wrapped around a −2 configuration: the most comfortable arrest available to his type, because it rewards his native strength, relieves his symptom, and scores institutionally (hours sat and kōans passed are cut-moves, per §5.1’s measurement corollary). In a good container, the tradition’s genius answers its own trap: a Roshi with a live F-column runs the anti-T3 instrument and refuses the bypass on sight, and the monastery force-feeds what the cushion cannot — the sangha as an F3 gymnasium: the same irritating people, daily, for years, no exit; the teacher as a devotion-object that cannot be aestheticized away; the tenzo’s kitchen as care-in-the-concrete. There, zazen plays its correct role — maintenance of the native line and dampening of the reactivity that made his F3-ordeals fail before — while the relation-shaped ordeal does the developmental work, and the path runs (3,2) → (3,3), the Warm Authority: standards intact, affection no longer gated by them. Only then is the frame-rung his to take honestly.
The fork has a somatic tell. Because the witness-work recharges his native line while the breath-and-body stratum spends (T7), his practice will quietly re-weight itself toward M unless the container prevents it — breath becoming a concentration object, relaxation a technique, the hours migrating toward insight — and a teacher can read incipient bypass in one question: where in the practice did the body go? For this man the prescription inverts the default: more floor, less summit — inhabit, receive, be breathed — and let the witness wait until there is a warm body for it to be free in.
In one sentence: for this man, daily zazen alone is a stacked cut that converts the Critic into the Ironist and postpones the F3 eruption at compound interest; zazen inside a person-dense container with an F-complete teacher is legitimate maintenance while the sangha teaches the only lesson actually due — that love is climate, not weather, which no amount of watching the weather from above will ever teach.
9.7 What the showcase shows
Read one way, the chapter is the model interpreting a tradition. Read the other way, the tradition corroborates the model at four independent points: Kakuan’s extension of the Ox-Herding series (the Vanished corrected, the F-catch-up appended), the two-swords razor (M6 distinguished solely by its F-completion), grandmotherly mind in the cook’s manual (the completion function as curriculum), and the death poem (the sixth depth as final examination). Four internal criteria, none derived from this model, all landing on its joints — which is the kind of convergence a structural theory owes its readers, and the reason this chapter exists.
10. Case studies
Placements worked at full depth — longer than a resonance entry, run through the whole protocol on material that resists easy reading. The section will grow; it opens with the strongest historical candidate the men’s summit cell has.
10.1 St. Francis of Assisi — M6·F6, the Elder (with one flagged alternative)
The F-column first, because it is the easy half. His anima at F6 is as documented as the archive permits. The Canticle of the Creatures is the sixth depth in primary-source form: Brother Sun, Sister Water, Mother Earth — the world itself become a face — and then the line almost no one else in the tradition dared: welcoming Sister Death, communion with the one total otherness that will never turn toward you. Radiance independent of any receiver: he preached to birds. The wolf of Gubbio is register-meeting (F5) at legend-grade; the leper kissed at the conversion is F4’s whole content in one act — love across the frame his entire class was built to exclude; the Sultan of Egypt, met unarmed across the Crusade’s battle-lines and received with honor, is F4–F5 performed in wartime, across the era’s deepest paradigm divide. Cumulativity (A4) mostly holds beneath: real delight (God’s jongleur; the Christmas feast at which “even the walls should eat meat”), real devotion (Leo, Clare, the brothers). One seam: F1 — the man who called his body “Brother Ass” and mortified it toward blindness had a damaged relation at the ground rung… and then, dying, apologized to his body. Not a counter-example: the rhythm’s last catch-up executed on the record — the trajectory clause (§6.0) catching what a snapshot would misread.
The M-row, under G6 discipline. Sanctity is gravitas, and gravitas licenses no rung inference; so — operations actually performed on the record. They are there, in the channel that matters. The naked square (renouncing the inheritance before father and bishop, returning even the clothes): a frame — wealth, family, class, name — relinquished without loss of self, publicly, in one act; M6’s defining operation. Stepping down from the headship of his own order (1220), watching it reorganized against his founding vision, and remaining whole — the claim laid down, the man intact; compare the Regent, who cannot relinquish what she never took. The Sultan crossing: the enemy paradigm entered, its hospitality codes used, exited. Beneath: a Rule genuinely authored (M5), missions directed (M2–M3), standpoints held under pressures that would flatten most rows. What is not on the record: systematic or metasystematic word-channel cognition — he refused theology, distrusted books, spoke in concrete symbols. An SCT would plausibly score Francis low, concrete-operational throughout — which makes him a walking demonstration of §6.0’s caveat: the instrument reads the word-channel; his rungs ran through the deed-channel, and the correction that deed and word are channels, not rungs (§2), is exactly what licenses reading the square, the abdication, and the Sultan as M6 operations performed in deed. Without that correction he is unplaceable; with it, precise.
The Elder’s tell, item by item. Has someone he complains to: Brother Leo, documented. Receives as readily as gives: nursed by Clare and Leo without deflection — and the stigmata are, whatever else one holds about them, receiving inscribed in the body: the Pastor’s missing channel, wide open. Merriment: canonical to the point of title. Cost enumerable: the null-mimicry test passes instantly — body, eyes, father, inheritance, the order’s first form; he could itemize every relinquishment, which is precisely what the Vanished cannot do.
The honest counter-datum. The Testament, dictated dying: the primitive rule of poverty is to be kept without glosses — the one thing he forbade anyone, forever, to reinterpret. Run Pass 2: is poverty his exempt domain? If unexaminable, the configuration reads Visionary (M5·F6, +1) — “can revise everything except the ending,” which the no-gloss clause states almost verbatim: the man who put down the office but not the vision. The Elder reading answers: he submitted institutionally to the Church’s modifications while keeping personal witness — laid down control, kept fidelity — and the Elder is expressly allowed to be partisan for his own. This assessment weighs the abdication-and-remaining over the Testament’s clause and places him at the Elder, with the Visionary reading of his final decade flagged as the defensible alternative. That is also the right epistemics: real lives exceed cells (§11), and Francis exceeds his by exactly this one clause.
Two structural yields. He is a live specimen for §8.5’s open rung-6 question: Lady Poverty as his bride is the anima wedded to a personification — relation-to-the-transcendent carrying the contrasexual at the summit — and his case argues for the “only adequate relation” side rather than “ultimate substitution,” since every human test (interface, transfer, cost) shows the functions owned, not carried; evidence, not proof, and the question stays open — now with a specimen attached. And for the resonance slate he scores approximately 28 (R1 = 4, R2 = 3 with the Testament wrinkle, R3 = 2 under hagiographic noise, R4 = 4 — the square and the Canticle are scene-carriage of the first order, R5 = 4): Second at the Elder behind Gandalf, and the cell’s only historical figure, which the complete-cell sourcing rules welcome.
11. Limitations
No psychometric instrument exists for the model as a whole; placement is ordinal and hermeneutic, dependent on collateral report in the deficit zone, where self-report is structurally uninformative. The F-line has no third-person psychometrics and may constitutively admit none — measurement-from-outside is itself an M-act; only second-person methods (attunement microanalysis, coherence interviews) reach it, and the line is definable from outside while knowable only from inside. The six-stage count is the minimal count whose boundaries all sit on attested cognitive discontinuities and none straddle the formal/systematic watershed; it is optimal under those criteria, not a discovered natural constant. Stage imagery is archetypal; stage order is logical necessity (A3); the model needs the rungs, not the costumes. A1 excludes intra-native pathology and thus a large clinical population; row 0 partially reopens that scope and is the least stable, least self-reportable region. Relation-at-parity is an assumption of the balance law, not a derived result. Contextual stability of N is unmodelled. A0 is axiomatic, not argued. Exemplars are illustrations under the stated matching spec, never assessments; fictional figures are structures with the noise removed, and real lives always exceed a cell. Two questions §8 states and declines to settle: whether relation to the transcendent at rung 6 — the mystics’ bridegroom-Christ, Sophia-devotion — is the ultimate substitution or the only relation adequate to a stage whose content is total otherness; and whether an artificial carrier can be a wronged party under the fourth test, a question of machine moral status outside the model’s machinery.

Correction history — do not reintroduce
- Active contra read as absence (v4, Instinctive Judge) — the column marks development, never absence. 2. Row-constant deprivation (v5) — deficits are cumulative sets. 3. “Correct and cold” above the diagonal (v5) — no deficit exists there; damage lands on the native essence. 4. Silent deficit (v6) — deficit is undifferentiated and eruptive, never silent; projection restored as primary diagnostic. 5. Balanced-pair denials in the old M4/F4 bands (v2-final) — every cell audited against A4 before its Tell. Policy change this version, recorded here rather than in the body: the build rule excluding ego-development comparison sections was rescinded once A3 made the cognitive line internal — §5.5 is its deliberate completion. Boundary repairs this version: deed and word merged at M3 (Jung’s joint was a channel, not a stage); the old fourth stage fanned into Frame–Meaning–Freedom (4–6), resolving the Emma Jung/Deida naming conflict — both were right about different rungs; Sophia and the Sovereign relocated to 6; Unitive identified as the 6-diagonal, not a rung.
